Why did Yaakov and his children have to descend to Egypt in order to become a great nation? Why couldn't our nation develop in the Land of Canaan?

How do we know that Yaakov did not descend willingly to Egypt? He had just been told (Bereishis 45:26-28) that his long-lost son Yosef was there!
