1)

REASONS FOR THE BIGDEI KEHUNAH (Yerushalmi Perek 7 Halachah 3 Daf 37b)

(a)

(Mishnah): A Kohen Gadol serves in eight Kelim, and a Hedyot in four - Kesones (cloak), underpants, turban and sash. A Kohen Gadol has four more - Choshen, Efod, Me'il and Tzitz.

1.

With these he is asked [to be answered through] the Urim v'Tumim.

2.

We do not ask for a commoner, only for a king, Beis Din, or someone whom the Tzibur needs.

(b)

(Gemara) Question: Why does a Kohen Gadol serve in eight Kelim?

(c)

Answer (R. Chananyah, the colleague of Rabanan): This corresponding to Bris Milah, which is on the eighth day - "Brisi Haysah Ito.''

(d)

Question: Why doesn't he serve in the gold garments [in Kodesh ha'Kodoshim]?

(e)

Answer #1: It is due to pride.

(f)

Answer #2 (R. Simon): It is due to "Al Tis'hader Lifnei Melech.''

(g)

Answer #3 (R. Levi): The prosecutor cannot become the advocate. Yesterday (i.e. in the past) it says about [Yisrael] "va'Ya'asu Lahem Elohei Zahav'', and now he stands and serves in gold garments?!

(h)

(Beraisa - R. Chiyah): "U'Levesham'' - u'Valu Sham (they will wear away there). There they will be buried, there they will decay, and they are not Kosher for the coming Yom Kipur.

(i)

(Beraisa - R. Dosa): They are Kosher for a Kohen Hedyot.

(j)

(Beraisa - Rebbi): There are two refutations of this - one due to Bigdei Kohen Gadol (we may not descend in Kedushah to use them for a Hedyot), and one due to Bigdei Kohen Hedyot (his sash is different, like we explain now);

1.

(Beraisa): Rebbi and R. Elazar bei R. Shimon did not argue about the sash of a Kohen Gadol [in Bigdei Lavan] on Yom Kipur, that it is of [pure] linen, and about the rest of the year, that it is of Kil'ayim (wool and linen);

2.

What did they argue about? They argued about the sash of a Kohen Hedyot. Rebbi says that it has Kil'ayim, and R. Elazar bei R. Shimon says that it has no Kil'ayim.

(k)

(R. Yakov bar Acha citing R. Avahu citing R. Yochanan): Rebbi learns from "v'Asisa l'Aharon ul'Vanav Kachah k'Chol Asher Tzivisi Osachah'' - just like Aharon's garments have Kil'ayim, also his sons' garments have Kil'ayim.

(l)

How does R. Elazar bei R. Shimon expound this? Just like Aharon [wears garments] proper for him, also his sons [wear garments] proper for them.
