What is the meaning of "k'Arye Ya'aleh mi'Ge'on ha'Yarden El Neve Eisan"?

1.

Rashi (50:44), Radak citing Targum Yonasan: A king with his camp will come upon them like a lion that ascends from the height of the Yarden to a shepherd's pen. Radak - it will be as easy for him to conquer as a shepherd's pen. The Targum of Neve is a pen, like "Nevos Keros Ro'im" (Tzefanyah 2:6). Eisan - the place that is strong now, will be [weak] like a shepherd's pen.

2.

Radak: The one who will destroy Edom will ascend like a lion, without fear. He will ascend from Ge'on ha'Yarden, i.e. he will increase and overpower like water increases when the Yarden overflows its banks. "Neve Eisan" is a strong place, i.e. Har Se'ir.

3.

Malbim: The [primary] city of Malchus Edom is metaphorically called a habitation of flocks. A tearing lion comes upon it from Ge'on ha'Yarden; the very strong lions are there. I.e. a strong king will come to conquer it.

2)

Why does it mention specifically the Yarden?

1.

Rashi (here and (50:44): It is a place of lions. The Targum of "v'Eichah Ta'aseh bi'Ge'on ha'Yarden" (12:5) is 'Kaveil Cheivas Bra Di v'Rom Yardena.'

2.

Radak: It is in Eretz Yisrael, and from the glory of Eretz Yisrael the evil will come to them - "v'Alu Moshi'im b'Har Tziyon Lishpot Es Har Esav" (Ovadyah 1:21)

3)

What is the meaning of "Argi'a"?

1.

Rashi: I will bring close the Rega (moment that this will occur).

2.

Radak #1: When I will make Yisrael quiet and calm

4)

What is the meaning of "Aritzenu me'Aleha"?

1.

Rashi #1: Suddenly, with success, [the enemy] will destroy it, and return quickly to his place.

2.

Rashi #2, Targum Yonasan: I will elevate [the enemy] mi'Ma'al (above Edom). This is like "umi'Ma'al la'Raki'a" (Yechezkel 1:26), "mi'Ma'al Lo" (Yeshayah 6:2) "ma'Al l'Madav" (Shmuel I, 7:39).

3.

Radak: I will remove Yisrael from Eretz Edom, where they were exiled.

4.

Malbim: I will make the lion leave this habitation of flocks for a moment. He will go back to his place [but return very soon].

5)

What is the meaning of "u'Mi Vachur Eleha Efkod"?

1.

Rashi: The one whom I chose to take My vengeance, I will appoint him on [Edom].

2.

Radak: Whoever is a warrior, I will appoint him on Eretz Edom.

3.

Malbim: The enemy will return (refer to 49:19:4:4) to this habitation of flocks. I will appoint over this place all chosen warriors. All will gather against it for war - "v'Tzir ba'Goyim Shalu'ach" (14).

6)

What is the question "Mi Chamoni"?

1.

Radak: Who is like Me, that he can stand against Me?!

2.

Malbim: Since I will appoint over it warriors of the nations for war, no one can save it from My hand, for no one can stand against Me.

7)

What is the question "u'Mi Yo'ideni"?

1.

Rashi: Who will summons Me to war, to fight Me?!

2.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: Who can protect against Me?!

3.

Malbim: No one can take Me to judgment in front of the judges of the land, for who will summons Me to judgment?!

8)

What is the question "u'Mi Zeh Ro'eh Asher Ya'amod Lefanai"?

1.

Radak: Who is Melech Edom, that he will stand in front of Me?!

2.

Radak citing Targum Yonasan: No king has strength in front of Me.

3.

Malbim: The shepherd himself cannot save the flock, for what shepherd can stand in front of Me?!

9)

Why are these verses said also in the Nevu'ah of [the fall of] Bavel (50:44-45)?

1.

Radak: [Also] their punishment was great, like they did evil to Yisrael. The verse hints to the grandeur of Yisrael and their salvation, for then Edom will be destroyed.

2.

Malbim (50:44): The prophecy about both of them is similar, for both of them destroyed the Beis ha'Mikdash.
