Al Ha'Nisim

עַל הַנִּסִּים וְעַל הַפּוּרְקָן וְעַל הַגְּבוּרוֹת וְעַל הַתְּשׁוּעוֹת וְעַל הַמִּלְחָמוֹת שֶׁעָשִׂיתָ לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה.

[We thank You] for the miracles, for the deliverance, for the mighty deeds, for the salvations, and for the battles that You performed for our forefathers, in those days, at this time.

בִּימֵי מַתִּתְיָהוּ בֶן יוֹחָנָן כֹּהֵן גָּדוֹל חַשְׁמוֹנָאִי וּבָנָיו כְּשֶׁעָמְדָה מַלְכוּת יָוָן הָרְשָׁעָה עַל עַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְהַשְׁכִּיחָם תּוֹרָתֶךָ וּלְהַעֲבִירָם מֵחֻקֵּי רְצוֹנֶךָ. וְאַתָּה בְּרַחֲמֶיךָ הָרַבִּים עָמַדְתָּ לָהֶם בְּעֵת צָרָתָם רַבְתָּ אֶת רִיבָם דַּנְתָּ אֶת דִּינָם נָקַמְתָּ אֶת נִקְמָתָם מָסַרְתָּ גִבּוֹרִים בְּיַד חַלָּשִׁים וְרַבִּים בְּיַד מְעַטִּים וּטְמֵאִים בְּיַד טְהוֹרִים וּרְשָׁעִים בְּיַד צַדִּיקִים וְזֵדִים בְּיַד עוֹסְקֵי תוֹרָתֶךָ. וּלְךָ עָשִׂיתָ שֵׁם גָּדוֹל וְקָדוֹשׁ בְּעוֹלָמֶךָ וּלְעַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל עָשִׂיתָ תְּשׁוּעָה גְדוֹלָה וּפוּרְקָן כְּהַיּוֹם הַזֶּה. וְאַחַר כֵּן בָּאוּ בָנֶיךָ לִדְבִיר בֵּיתֶךָ וּפִנּוּ אֶת הֵיכָלֶךָ וְטִהֲרוּ אֶת מִקְדָּשֶׁךָ וְהִדְלִיקוּ נֵרוֹת בְּחַצְרוֹת קָדְשֶׁךָ וְקָבְעוּ שְׁמוֹנַת יְמֵי חֲנֻכָּה אֵלּוּ לְהוֹדוֹת וּלְהַלֵּל לְשִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל.

In the days of Matisyahu son of Yochanan the Kohen Gadol the Hasmonaean, and his sons, when the evil Greek kingdom stood up against your nation Yisrael, to make them forget your Torah, and depart from the laws of Your Will. But You, in Your great mercy, stood on their behalf at their time of trouble; You took up their dispute, judged their cause, and took their revenge. You gave over the mighty into the hands of the weak, the many to the few, the impure to the pure, the evil to the righteous, and the wanton ones to those who involve themselves in Your Torah. You thus made for Yourself a Great and Holy Name in Your world; and for Your nation Yisrael, You made a great salvation and deliverance, as this day. Afterwards, Your children came to the abode of Your house, they cleared out Your Sanctuary, purified Your Temple, lit lights in Your holy courtyards; and they established these eight days of Chanukah, to thank and praise Your Great Name.
