| R. Eliezer once descended as Chazan (on a fast day); he recited the twenty-four blessings but was not answered (with rain). R. Akiva descended as Chazan following him, and said, "Avinu Malkeinu (Our Father, our King)! We have no King other than You! Avinu Malkeinu! For Your sake have mercy on us! And rain fell. The rabbis were suspicious of him, but a Bas-Kol said that it was not that R. Akiva was greater; rather that he was willing to overlook wrongs done against him. |
If Rebbi Akiva had this trait whereas Rebbi Eliezer did not, doesn't that in itself make him greater?
