Ta'anis 5b-6a

כי הוו מיפטרי מהדדי, אמר ליה, ליברכן מר! אמר ליה אמשול לך משל למה הדבר דומה, לאדם שהיה הולך במדבר והיה רעב ועיף וצמא, ומצא אילן שפירותיו מתוקין וצלו נאה ואמת המים עוברת תחתיו. אכל מפירותיו ושתה ממימיו וישב בצילו, וכשביקש לילך אמר, אילן אילן במה אברכך? אם אומר לך שיהו פירותיך מתוקין, הרי פירותיך מתוקין! שיהא צילך נאה, הרי צילך נאה! שתהא אמת המים עוברת תחתיך, הרי אמת המים עוברת תחתיך! אלא יהי רצון שכל נטיעות שנוטעין ממך יהיו כמותך! אף אתה במה אברכך? אם בתורה הרי תורה אם בעושר הרי עושר אם בבנים הרי בנים, אלא יהי רצון שיהיו צאצאי מעיך כמותך.

Rav Nachman asked Rav Yitzchak for a Berachah before parting company. Rav Yitzchak gave the parable of a man walking through the desert, who was hungry, thirsty, and tired. He came across a tree whose fruit was sweet, whose shade was pleasant, and underneath which a channel of water flowed. After eating from its fruit, drinking from the water, and resting in its shade, he got up to leave. 'How can I bless you?,' he said to the tree. 'Your fruit is already sweet, your shade is already pleasant, and there is already a river flowing beneath you. May it be Hashem's will that all the saplings that are planted from you, should be like you!' So too, Rav Nachman was already blessed - with Torah, wealth and children (corresponding to the fruit, shade and water - Agados Maharsha); so Rav Yitzchak bestowed upon his Talmid a blessing that his children should be like him.

BLESSING THE TREE
