תניא אמר רבי שמעון ארבעה דברים היה רבי עקיבא דורש ואני אין דורש כמותו ... צום העשירי זה עשרה בטבת שבו סמך מלך בבל על ירושלים שנאמר וַיְהִי דְבַר ה' אֵלַי בַּשָּׁנָה הַתְּשִׁיעִית בַּחֹדֶשׁ הָעֲשִׂירִי בֶּעָשׂוֹר לַחֹדֶשׁ לֵאמֹר בֶּן אָדָם כְּתָב לְךָ אֶת שֵׁם הַיּוֹם אֶת עֶצֶם הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה סָמַךְ מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל אֶל יְרוּשָׁלִַם (יחזקאל כד:א-ב) ואמאי קרי ליה עשירי עשירי לחדשים. והלא היה ראוי זה לכתוב ראשון ולמה נכתב כאן? כדי להסדיר חדשים כתיקנן.	R. Shimon says: There are four Derashos of R. Akiva with which I differ ... [R. Akiva says,] "The fast of the tenth" is the tenth of Teves, when the King of Bavel laid siege to Jerusalem (Yechezkel 24:1-2). It is so called because it is in the tenth month. Since this was the first event [of the 4 fasts] chronologically, why is it not listed first? It is more important to list the months in the correct order.
ואני איני אומר כן, אלא צום העשירי זה חמשה בטבת שבו באת שמועה לגולה שהוכתה העיר, שנאמר וַיְהִי בִּשְׁתֵּי עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה בָּעֲשִׂרִי בַּחֲמִשָּׁה לַחֹדֶשׁ לְגָלוּתֵנוּ בָּא אֵלַי הַפָּלִיט מִירוּשָׁלִַם לֵאמֹר הֻכְּתָה הָעִיר (יחזקאל לג:כא) ועשו יום שמועה כיום שריפה. ונראין דברי מדבריו שאני אומר על ראשון ראשון ועל אחרון אחרון והוא אומר על ראשון אחרון ועל אחרון ראשון, אלא שהוא מונה לסדר חדשים ואני מונה לסדר פורעניות.	R. Shimon says, I disagree; "The fast of the tenth" is the fifth of Teves, when news of the destruction of Jerusalem reached the Diaspora (Yechezkel 33:21) - and they made the day of the report (5 Teves) just like the day on which it burned (Tish'ah b'Av). My explanation is better, in that the fasts are listed in the chronological order of the events that they mark. R. Akiva considers only the order of months; I also consider the order of events.

... בשמונה בטבת נכתבה התורה יונית בימי תלמי המלך, והיה חשך בעולם שלשה ימים. ובט' בו לא נודע איזו היא הצרה שאירע בו.	... On the 8th of Teves, the Torah was translated into Greek in the days of King Ptolemy, whereupon there was darkness in the world for three days. On the 9th, an unknown tragedy occurred.

דתניא, מעשה בתלמי המלך, שכינס שבעים ושנים זקנים והכניסן בשבעים ושנים בתים, ולא גילה להם על מה כינסן. ונכנס אצל כל אחד ואחד ואמר להם כתבו לי תורת משה רבכם! נתן הקדוש ברוך הוא בלב כל אחד ואחד עצה והסכימו כולן לדעת אחת. וכתבו לו א-להים ברא בראשית, אעשה אדם בצלם ובדמות ...	A Beraisa states: King Ptolemy gathered 72 Elders, placing them in 72 rooms. He then entered each room, and said, "Write for me [in Greek] the Torah of Moshe!" Hashem granted counsel to each one of them, and they all concurred, as one view. [They also implemented certain modifications;] they wrote, "Elokim created in the beginning" (in place of "In the beginning Elokim created); "I shall make man in an image and semblance" (in place of "Let us make man in Our image and Our semblance") ...
