What are the connotations of "Va'yochal ha?Am??

Rashi (in K?sav-Yad Teiman): Refer to 25:2:1:1. "Vayochal ha?Am? means that they committed adultery.

Targum Onkelos: It means that they ate from their sacrifices.

Targum Yonasan: It means that they ate in their banqueting-houses.

What is the significance of the sequence of events "Vayochal ha?Am Va'yishtachavu l?Eloheihem?"?
