CHAMETZ MIXTURES (Cont'd) (Yerushalmi Halachah 1 Daf 20a)

(a)

Question: Does one receive lashes for eating it?

(b)

Answer (R. Yirmiyah/R.Ila): No, as the Beraisa teaches that one is punishable with Kares for absolute Chametz and for its mixture one receives forty lashes.

(c)

(Rav): Just as one is exempt for eating se'or, so one is exempt for eating (these Chametz mixtures of) Babylonian Kutach and Madian beer.

(d)

(R. Bun ban Kahana to R. Illa): Rav (explains the Beraisa that for its mixture one receives lashes) is referring to Chametz and matzah that became mixed. (But if Chametz was mixed with another type of food, its taste would be annulled.)

(e)

Question (R. Yosa on R. Bun): What is the case? If the majority is Chametz he receives Kares; if the majority is matzah, he would fulfill his obligation of eating matzah?!

(f)

Answer (R. Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak): It contains less than a k'Zayis (olive's worth) of Chametz and the Beraisa follows the opinion of R. Shimon that less than a k'Zayis is punishable with lashes (but not Kares).

(g)

(R. Yirmiyah or R. Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchak): A pot in which Chamirah was cooked should not be used again to cook the same type of dish until after Pesach - we can infer that if it was another type of dish it would be permitted (even on Pesach), as long as three other (non-Chametz) dishes were cooked in it before Pesach. (Note: Although the Hebrew text reads "מודה'', the Korban Ha'Edah's text is "Chamirah''. Other mefarshim have additional alternative texts).

(h)

Question: Just as its taste is annulled through three other types of dishes, its taste should also be annulled through the same type of dish?!

(i)

Answer: Even after three other dishes, its own type of dish will reawaken its taste and prohibit it.

(j)

(R. Yaakov bar Zavdi): R. Abahu ordered the wheat grinders not to place one sack on another, as they would warm up and become Chametz.

(k)

R. Chinana bar Papa went himself to check and caution the grinders.

(l)

R. Yosi bar R. Bun would have a metal smith grind his wheat (he did not allow the wheat grinders to do it as their clothing was filled with Chametz flour and he was afraid that it would fall into the fresh flour).

(m)

R. Abun ordered the grinders to put a vessel of water into the measuring dish and overturn it four times (in order to wash it).

(n)

R. Chananya and R. Mana had a dispute. One said that it is permitted to put wheat onto moist grasses but onto moist earth is prohibited. The other one said that the opposite is correct.

(o)

Clarification (R. Chanania son of R. Hillel): Even according to the opinion that moist grasses are permitted, it is only permitted if he picked them after noon as the dew had already dried up from them (but before noon they are too moist and one may not rest wheat upon them).
