This cannot be in Nebuchadnetzar's second year. It is after the three years that he commanded the youths to learn for three years!

1.

Rashi citing Seder Olam: It is in the second year from the Churban. It is called [the second year] of his kingship, for he showed his evil, to enter the abode of the King of the world.

2.

Ibn Ezra #1: It is the second year that he ruled over Yerushalayim, after Tzidkiyah rebelled and he destroyed Yerushalayim.

3.

Ibn Ezra citing R. Moshe: Two years remained in his kingship 1 .

4.

Ibn Ezra #2: It is the second year in which he ruled over all Goyim. Yirmeyah said that he will conquer them. Then, he was serene, and thought on his bed what will be in the end of days, like Daniel mentioned. Malbim ? after he ruled over the entire world, he thought who will rule after him, and [Shamayim] informed him what will be in the end of days.

1

Ibn Ezra: We do not find like this in any verse!

2)

Why does it say "Chalomos" (plural)?

1.

Ibn Ezra: The image had gold, silver, copper, iron and earthenware. Usually, one sees one matter in a dream!

2.

Malbim: There were many dreams in this dream ? the image, the rock that broke the image?

3)

What do we learn from "va'Tispa'em Rucho"?

1.

Rashi: It says about Pharaoh "va'Tipa'em Rucho", for only the Perush was hidden from him. Here he forgot also the dream; the extra Sov hints to this. Va'Tispa'em is an expression of throbbing.

2.

Malbim: He was afraid at the time of the dream. This shows that it was not folly, rather, a true dream.

4)

What is the meaning of "Nihyasah Alav"?

1.

Rashi: It is an expression of breakage, like "Hoveh Al Hoveh."

2.

Ibn Ezra: It is the opposite of 'my sleep was pleasant to me.' Nihyasah is like Nehi (lamenting).

3.

Malbim: He remained asleep; he did not waken due to the dream. A dream of folly does not make an impression on the dreamer. A dream of Nevu'ah makes the pillars of his body shudder. Sometimes fear and trembling seize him at the time of the dream. However, then he always wakens! Since he did not waken, he knew that it is not due to blood or vapors, or fainting in his sleep. Rather, his spiritual Nefesh saw a vision of a future evil. Therefore, he put to his heart to know the dream.
