Mishnah in Maseches Shabbos: (A person should not sit before the barber close to Minchah time until he has prayed; a person should not enter the bathhouse close to Minchah time until he has prayed.) If they began (these activities), they need not stop.

Question: What is called beginning in the bathhouse?

Answer #1 (R. Zerikan citing R. Chanina): When he unties his belt.

Answer #2 (Rav): When he unties his shoe.

R. Yehoshua ben Levi was accustomed to hearing the Torah portion from his grandson every Shabbos eve.

Once, he forgot and he went to wash in the bathhouse of Tiveria and he was leaning on the shoulders of R. Chiya bar Ba.

He suddenly remembered that he had not heard the Torah portion from his grandson and he left the bathhouse.

Question: What exactly happened?

Answer (R. Darosi citing R. Elazar bar Yosi): He remembered after he had already removed his clothes.

Question (R. Chiya bar Ba to R. Yehoshua B''L): Did you not teach us that if they had already begun in the bathhouse, they do not need to stop (to pray Minchah and therefore also to learn Torah)?

Answer (R.YB''L): My son Chiyah, is it light in your eyes that whoever hears the Torah portion from his grandson, it is as if he heard it from Mount Sinai?!

What is the source for this? The pasuk states (Devarim 4, 9), "and you shall inform your children and your children's children of the day that you stood before Hash-m your G-d at Chorev'' - and also when you hear it from your grandson, it is as if you stood and heard it at Chorev (Mount Sinai).

R. Chizkiyah bar Yirmiyah / R. Chiya citing R. Yochanan: If, when quoting a teaching, you are able to cite all of the Rabbis back until Mount Sinai, you should do so; otherwise, quote the first and last Rabbi in the chain.

Gidul: Whoever says a teaching in the name of the author should view himself as if the author is standing in from of him.

What is the source for this? The pasuk states (Tehilim 39, 7), "Only in shadow does a man walk etc.'' - when a person quotes someone, it is as if he is walking in his shadow.

The pasuk states (Mishlei 20, 6), "Among most people, each man declares his kindness, but who can find a honest man?'' - this refers to R. Zeira.

As R. Zeira said - We do not need to consider teachings that Rav Sheshes quoted from others, as he is blind and does not see the people who are teaching him so he might not fully understand what they said.

Question (R. Zeira to R. Yasa): Do you know Bar Padaya that you keep quoting? (Otherwise, you should not be quoting him.)

Answer (R. Yasa): No, but I heard them from R. Yochanan who quoted him.

Answer (R. Ba bar Zavda): No, but I heard them from Rav Ada bar Achva who quoted him.
