Mishnah in Maseches Eduyos: A son inherits his father's looks, strength, wealth, wisdom and longevity.

From where do we learn that he inherits his father's looks? The pasuk states (Tehilim 90, 16), "May Your works be seen by Your servants and Your splendor upon their children.''

Strength - (Tehilim 112, 2), "His offspring will be mighty in the land etc.''

Wealth - (Tehilim 37, 25), "I have been a youth and also aged and I did not see a righteous man abandoned nor his offspring begging for bread.''

Wisdom - (Devarim 11, 19), "You shall teach them to your children''.

Years - (ibid, pasuk 21), "in order that your years and the years of your children shall increase''.

Just as he receives these five traits from his father, so he must serve his father in five ways - feed him, give him to drink, clothe him, put shoes on him and lead him.

But in contrast, if the father sinned, he gives the opposite traits to his children, as the pasuk states (Shmuel 2, 3, 29), "On the head of Yoav should fall...zav (a type if illness), metzorah (leprosy), machzik bepelach (insanity), falling to the sword and lacking of bread...

A Zav is weak (this corresponds to 'strength' above); a metzorah's face becomes ugly (corresponding to 'looks'); machzik bepelach is insane (corresponding to 'wisdom'); falling to the sword (corresponding to longevity); lacking of bread i.e. poverty (corresponding to wealth).

When Shlomo HaMelech came to kill Yoav (to fill his late father's wishes), Yoav said to him, "Your father decreed upon me 5 decrees (i.e. the 5 curses listed above) and I will receive them and you will also kill me?!'' (Rather, you Shlomo, should accept the 5 curses and I will allow you to kill me (according to your father's wishes).)

Shlomo accepted them and they were all fulfilled through the descendents of Dovid...

Rechavam was a zav, as the pasuk states (Melachim 1, 12, 18), "And King Rechavam strengthened himself to mount his chariot to escape to Yerushalayim.'' One opinion is that he was a zav and the other opinion is that he was delicate.

Uziyahu was a metzorah, a leper, as the pasuk states (Divrei Hayamim 2, 26, 19), "And King Uziyahu was a leper until the day that he died''.

Machzik bepelach - (Lit. One who holds a spindle - like women) This refers to Yoash, as the pasuk states (Divrei Hayamim 2, 24, 24), "...and they executed judgments against Yoash''.

Beraisa (R. Yishmael): This teaches that they sent against him lustful thugs who had never been with a woman and they abused him in the way that they would abuse a woman, as the pasuk states (Hoshea 5, 5), "The pride of Israel will be humbled before Him'' - is understood to mean that they abused the pride of Israel (i.e. the king) before you.

Falling to the sword - this is Yoshiyahu, as the pasuk states (Divrei Hayamim 2, 35, 23), "The archers shot at King Yoshiyahu...'' R. Yochanan said that they made his body like a sieve.

Beraisa (R. Yishmael): They shot 300 arrows into the anointed one of Hash-m.

Lacking of bread - this is Yoyachin, as the pasuk states (Melachim 2, 25, 30), "His allowance was a daily allowance given to him etc.''
