What do we learn from "v'Hayah Zeh Shalom"?
Rashi: It will be total and fixed Shalom, without ceasing. It will be unlike other salvations ? afflictions came after them.
Radak #1: In place of the fear that we have now from Ashur, when he comes to our land, we will have Shalom, due to Mashi'ach ? "v'Diber Shalom la'Goyim" (Zecharyah 9:10).
Radak #2: Enemies will not come in our land like they used to come nowadays.
Malbim: Melech ha'Mashi'ach will grow to the ends of the land not via war rather, via the strength of Shalom. All the nations will accept his Torah, creed and kingship upon them.
Why does it say "Ashur Ki Yavo"?
Rashi: "Ki" is like Im (if). If Ashur will come in our land, like he comes now?
Radak: Refer to 5:4:1:2.
Malbim: Shalom will save us when Ashur comes to our land. We will not need to fight him, like earlier. He will be humbled under us, and seek a Bris of Shalom. From here until "Eretz Nimrod bi'Fsacheha" (5) is a Ma'amar Musgar (parenthetical comment). Before Mashi'ach ben David, while Mashi'ach ben Yosef ruled, we needed war, all the days of the war of Gog and Magog. If Ashur came to our land, we needed to raise seven shepherds against him to fight him.
What do we learn from "v'Chi Yidroch b'Armenoseinu"?
Radak: We will have Shalom from every fear, forever.
Malbim: In war of Gog and Magog, the nations will come to the land, but not enter Yerushalayim.
What is the meaning of "va'Hakemonu Alav"?
Radak: If the enemy will come at that time, like Melech Ashur comes now, the seven shepherds and eight Nesichim will stand against him and strike him.
Who are the seven shepherds and eight Nesichim?
Sukah 52b: David is in the middle of the shepherds. Adam 1 , Shes and Meshushelach are on his right, and Avraham, Yakov and Moshe are on his left. The Nesichim are Yishai, Sha'ul, Shmuel, Amos, Tzefanyah, Tzidkiyah 2 , Mashi'ach and Eliyahu. Rashi ? I do not know from where Chazal learned this.
Radak: They are officers of Melech ha'Mashi'ach. They will be shepherds of Yisrael based on his command, and princes appointed over them. They are seven and eight, corresponding to "Ten Chelek l'Shiv'ah v'Gam li'Shmonah" (Koheles 11:2), i.e. many shepherds and princes. Ro'im and Nesichim are the same; the matter is repeated in a different word.
Targum Yonasan: Appoint over us seven kings and eight great men. Radak ? this is astounding, that he translated 'over us.' Perhaps "Alav" is like Imo - with Melech ha'Mashi'ach. The same applies to "v'Alav Mate Menasheh" (Bamidbar 2:20).
Malbim #1: From the time that the enemy began to cut off from Yisrael, in the days of Yehoachaz ben Yehu, until Melech Ashur exiled them in the days of Hoshe'a ben Elah, there were eight kings of the 10 tribes ? Yehoachaz, his son Yo'ash, his son Yaravam, his son Zecharyah, his son Menachem, Pekachyah, Pekach and Hoshe'a. (Shalum is not counted, for he was killed right after becoming king.) Afterwards were seven shepherds from Yehudah ? Chizkiyah, Menasheh, Amon, Yehoachaz 3 , Yehoyakim, Yechanyah and Tzidkiyah 4 .
Malbim #2: This is a Nevu'ah for the future. Yechezkel prophesized about Gog and Magog. Ashur will come to Eretz Yisrael to fight Edom, like I explained there (Perek 32). Seven shepherds will come ? Egypt, Eilam, Meshech, Tuval, Edom, Nesichei Tzafon and Tzidonim. Perek 38 discusses eight Nesichim in the war ? Gog Nesi Eretz Magog, Meshech, Tuval, Paras, Kush, Put, Gomer and Beis Tugramah.
Radak and Abarvenel (Yeshayah, introduction DH ha'Shoresh ha'Shemini) list Chanoch in place of Adam. Rashi (52b) ? Yitzchak is omitted, for he went to save his descendants from the judgment of Gehinom (Yalkut Michah 552).
Why is Tzidkiyah counted among the seven shepherds? The Navi commanded him to submit to Nebuchadnetzar, and he rebelled against him! The text in Ein Yakov and Radak has Chizkiyah in place of Tzidkiyah. (PF)
Why does he omit Yoshiyah, who ruled for 31 years?! If it is a printing mistake, and the text should say 'Yoshiyah' in place of his son Yehoachaz (he is not counted, for he reigned only three months), why is Yechanyah counted? Also he reigned only three months! It is a Mitzvah to resolve this. (PF)
