GENERAL RULES OF BERACHOS (Yerushalmi Perek 6 Halachah 1 Daf 43b)

(a)

Question: Until what size [slice of bread] does one cut?

(b)

Answer: R. Chinena and R. Mana [argued about this]. One said up to a k'Zayis [less than this is stingy], and the other said up to (i.e. even) less than a k'Zayis.

(c)

The one who said a k'Zayis, this is like a Mishnah there teaches 'and all [Menachos] he breaks into pieces of a k'Zayis.' The one who said less than a k'Zayis, [this is like] R. Yishmael taught, he even returns them to [tiny crumbs, like] their flour (from which they were made).

(d)

(Beraisa): Anything over which one says after [eating] it three Brachos (Birkas ha'Mazon), he says before it ha'Motzi Lechem Min ha'Aretz. Anything that one does not say after it three Brachos, he does not say before it ha'Motzi Lechem Min ha'Aretz.

(e)

Question: Less than a k'Zayis - one does not say after it three Brachos - if so, he should not say before it ha'Motzi Lechem Min ha'Aretz!

(f)

Answer (R. Yakov bar Acha): [The Beraisa does not teach about the amount eaten. Rather,] it is needed to teach about other species [than the five grains. Since one does not say after them three Brachos, he does not say before them ha'Motzi.]

(g)

(R. Aba citing Rav): Those reclining may not taste anything until the Mevarech tastes (i.e. they are Yotzei through his Brachah).

(h)

(R. Yehoshua ben Levi): [Those reclining] may drink even though [the Mevarech] did not drink [yet].

(i)

Question: Does he argue [with Rav]?

(j)

Answer: (No.) Rav discusses when all of them need to eat from one loaf (over which he blessed). R. Yehoshua ben Levi discusses when each has his cup in his hand.

(k)

(Beraisa): The Mevarech extends his hand first [to take food from the bowl], but if he wanted to show honor to his Rebbi or someone greater than him in Torah, it is permitted.

(l)

When Rav [blessed and] cut [the bread], he would taste with his left hand, and distribute (slices to the others) with his right hand (which is more skilled and works faster; this minimized the time that they just wait).

(m)

(Rav Huna): If one [blessed, and before he tasted, he] said 'take Barich (the piece over which I blessed), take Barich', this is not a Hefsek (interruption to invalidate his) Brachah. If he said 'give fodder for the cattle', this is a Hefsek Brachah.

(n)

(Rav Huna): Shesisa (it is made with flour ground from parched grain) and minced Morsa (made from dates), one blesses sheha'Kol Nihyah bi'Dvaro on them.

(o)

(Rav Huna): If one put in his mouth and forgot and did not bless - if it is liquid, he spits it out. If it is food, he moves it to the sides [of his mouth, and blesses].

(p)

(R. Yitzchak bar Mari, in front of R. Yosi bei R. Avun, citing R. Yochanan): Even food, he spits it out, for it says "Yemalei Fi Tehilasecha Kol ha'Yom Tif'artecha." (One's mouth should be full of Hash-m's praise. One should not bless with something inside it.)

(q)

One who consumes [raw] wheat blesses on it Borei Minei Zar'onim.

(r)

If he baked [the wheat into bread] and cooked it - if the pieces are intact, he says ha'Motzi Lechem Min ha'Aretz and three Brachos. If the pieces are not intact, he says Borei Minei Mezonos and one Brachah me'Ein Shalosh (it mentions the themes of the three Brachos of Birkas ha'Mazon.

(s)

Question: How big must the pieces be?

(t)

Answer (R. Yosi bei R. Avun): They must be [at least] k'Zeisim.
