BERACHOS 35 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

THE SOURCE TO BLESS BEFORE EATING (Yerushalmi Perek 6 Halachah 1 Daf 41a)

(a)

(Mishnah) Question: Which Brachah do we say for Peros?

(b)

Answer: On fruits of a tree we say Borei Pri ha'Etz, except for wine. On wine, we say Borei Pri ha'Gafen.

(c)

On things that grow from the ground we say Borei Pri ha'Adamah, except for bread. On bread we say ha'Motzi Lechem Min ha'Aretz.

(d)

On Yerek (vegetables other than legumes) we say Borei Pri ha'Adamah;

(e)

R. Yehudah says, we say Borei Minei Desha'im.

(f)

(Gemara): It says "la'Shem ha'Aretz u'Melo'ah Tevel v'Yoshvei Vah" - one who gets any benefit from the world transgresses Me'ilah (benefit from Hekdesh), until the Brachos permit him.

(g)

(R. Avahu): It says "Pen Tikdash ha'Mele'ah ha'Zera Asher Tizra u'Sevu'as ha'Kerem" - the entire world and what it is full of, is made like a vineyard (in the fourth year; its fruits must be redeemed). What is the redemption? It is a Brachah.

(h)

(R. Chizkiyah citing R. Yirmeyah citing R. Avun citing Reish Lakish): "Amarta la'Shem Hash-m Atah Tovasi Bal Alecha" - [Hash-m says] if you ate and blessed, it is as if you ate your [food; I have no claim against you].

1.

Alternatively, "Tovasi Bal Alecha" - I am Mevaleh My good in you (it will not cease from you).

2.

Alternatively, "Tovasi Bal Alecha" - all goodness Yevalelu (will be mixed together) and come upon you.

(i)

(R. Acha): What is "Bal Alecha"? I will not bring good to the world mi'Bil'adecha (without you);

1.

This is like it says "u'Bil'adecha Lo Yarim Ish Es Yado."

(j)

(R. Chiya - Beraisa): "Kodesh Hilulim la'Shem" teaches that one must bless before and after [eating];

1.

From here, R. Akiva said that one may not taste anything until he blesses.

(k)

R. Chagai and R. Yirmeyah went to [be Mekadesh or sprinkle] Mei Chatas. R. Chagai immediately blessed on them.

1.

R. Yirmeyah: You did properly - all Mitzvos require a Brachah.

(l)

Question: What is the source that all Mitzvos require a Brachah?

(m)

Answer (R. Tanchuma citing R. Aba bar Kahana citing R. Elazar): "V'Etenah Lecha Es Luchos ha'Even veha'Torah veha'Mitzvos" equates Torah to Mitzvos. Just like Torah requires a Brachah, also Mitzvos require a Brachah.
