In order to prove that Chazal were correct, her husband Rebbi Meir enlisted the help of one of his students, asking him to seduce his wife. The student eventually succeeded in his seduction, but before sinning explained to Beruriyah how she had been set up and why. In her shame Beruriyah committed suicide. According to one opinion in our Gemara, Rebbi Meir was so embarrassed following this incident that he ran to Bavel.
