What is the comparison to not knowing Derech ha'Ru'ach?

1.

Rav Sadya Gaon: Just like you do not know the order of the winds and their motion, for they are like unknown matters in the womb, so you will not know the secret of Hashem's deeds.

2.

Rashi: The verse should be re-arranged. Just like you do not know matters in a full womb, even though it juts outside, so you do not know Derech ha'Ru'ach. The knowledge of both of these is the same. Neither is revealed to you. Sometimes you think to know the clouds that the wind will bring, and it does not come; it goes to another land. This expression ("Ka'asher

1

Metzudas David: You do not know these even if you hear the wind, and see the womb protruding.

2)

What are "Atzamim"?

1.

Rashi: They are enclosed things. This is like "v'Otzem Einav" (Yeshayah 33:15).

2.

Ibn Ezra, Rid: They are fetuses before they are born. They are foundations of the body; the flesh and skin are like a garment.

3.

Rashbam: They are man's thoughts. This is like "v'Otzem Einav."

3)

Why does it say "b'Veten ha'Mele'ah", and not ha'Malei (masculine)?

1.

Ibn Ezra #1: "Mele'ah" is a pregnant woman (it is a noun, and not an adjective).

2.

Ibn Ezra #2: It is as if Veten is Samuch [to Ishah; the word Ishah is omitted]. Ha'Mele'ah describes the Ishah.

3.

Ibn Ezra #3: Beten is feminine in Leshon ha'Kodesh 1 . There should be a Patach under the prefix Beis (in place of Hei ha'Yedi'ah), and a Dagesh in the Beis of the root, but there are not, just like "l'Ish ha'Ashir" (Shmuel II, 12:4).

1

Magihah (in Toras Chayim): E.g. "u'Veten Resha'im Techsar" (Mishlei 13:25).

4)

What are "Ma'ase ha'Elokim" that you cannot know?

1.

Rashi: His decree about poverty and wealth. Do not say 'I will refrain from Chesed lest I become poor, I will refrain from Torah lest I neglect working and become poor, I will not marry and father children and need to spend for them.'

2.

Rashbam: When rain will fall. Therefore, do not guard the Ru'ach and look at the clouds.

3.

Rid: Why He did this and that.

4.

Seforno: It is the creation.

5)

What do we learn from "Asher Ya'aseh Es ha'Kol"?

1.

Seforno: Not only did He make composites. He made also the substance and form. Man's intellect was created - "va'Yivra Elokim Es ha'Adam b'Tzalmo" (Bereishis 1:27). It is potential; you do not know if the actualization will be good or bad.

2.

Metzudas David: You do not know any matter of Hashem's deeds. Therefore, do not wait for the Ru'ach or fear the rain, for you cannot know when they will be.
