MIXING AND GRINDING ON SHABBOS (Yerushalmi Halachah 2 Daf 74)

(a)

(Mishnah): One may not make brine on Shabbos, but one may make saltwater and dip bread in it, or add it to a cooked food.

(b)

R. Yosi: Brine is the same, whether one makes a lot or a little!

1.

Which saltwater is permitted to make? He initially puts oil into the water or salt.

(c)

(Gemara) Question: What is the difference between brine and saltwater? (I.e. why does the first Tana forbid brine and permit saltwater?)

(d)

Answer: Brine requires a professional (Stam people do not know how to make it). Saltwater does not require a professional.

(e)

(Rav Huna): Whenever one puts salt in it and it dissolves in it, this is saltwater. If it does not dissolve, this is brine.

(f)

(R. Avahu): Whenever one puts an egg in it and it sinks, this is saltwater. If it does not sink, this is brine. (Eggs are denser than water. If one adds enough salt, the water becomes as dense as an egg, so an egg will not sink.)

(g)

One may make Yeinomalin (this will be explained) on Shabbos.

(h)

(R. Yosah citing R. Yochanan): This is wine, honey and peppers.

(i)

(R. Yosah citing R. Yochanan): One may mix [the peppers into the wine and honey], but he may not grind [them].

1.

(R. Yosah citing R. Yochanan): What needs [only] mixing is permitted. What needs grinding is forbidden. (We explained this like HA'GAON RAV C. KANIEVSKY, SHLITA.)

(j)

Question: Here (brine), it is not needed [only] to mix?! (Why is it forbidden?)

(k)

Answer (R. Yehudah ben Titas citing R. Yehudah bar Pazi citing Shimon bar Ba citing R. Yochanan): Here is different, for it is the final Melachah.

(l)

(R. Avahu citing R. Yochanan): One may break [clumps of salt], but one may not gather [salt from where it "grows'' - MASA D'YERUSHALAYIM].

(m)

(R. Avahu citing R. Yochanan): If garlic was minced [before Shabbos] - if it needed [more] mincing, it is forbidden [to mince it more on Shabbos]. If [it was fully minced, and he wants to mince more] to mix it with its oil, it is permitted.

(n)

(Mishnah): If garlic, unripe grapes and unripe grain were minced during the day (before Shabbos), R. Yishmael says, he may finish after dark. R. Akiva says, he may not finish.

(o)

(R. Yakov bar Acha citing R. Shimon bar Aba citing R. Chanina): They argue only about Chulin. Kohanim conduct with Terumah [leniently] like R. Yishmael [lest it be wasted. We explained this like PNEI MOSHE.]
