THE RAN EXPLAINS THE MISHNAH

(a)

Mishnah: If one vowed from 'Dagan', he is forbidden dry Mitzri beans.

1.

Explanation: Since it is Midgan (piled), i.e. they make a granary from it, R. Meir holds that it is called Dagan,

(b)

Gemara: "Uch'Parutz ha'Davar" (when the matter spread).

1.

Explanation: It is a verse in Divrei ha'Yamim. In the days of Chizkiyah, they were not zealous to separate Terumos and Ma'aseros. Chizkiyah enacted that they bring them to Beis Hash-m. "Uch'Parutz ha'Davar" is when the matter was strengthened, and Chizkiyah's enactment took force.

(c)

Gemara: Bnei Yisrael increased... if you will say that Dagan implies anything that is Midgan (piled), why does it say "v'Chol Tevu'as ha'Sadeh"?

1.

Explanation: All that is piled is included in Dagan. If so, Chol Tevu'as ha'Sadeh is [already] included.

(d)

Gemara: This includes tree fruits and Yerek.

1.

Explanation: For they do not make a granary from them.

(e)

Gemara: All agree about one who vows from Tevu'ah...

1.

Explanation: Even though our Mishnah said so in the name of an individual (R. Meir), all agree to it.

(f)

Gemara: One might have thought that 'Tevu'ah' includes everything.

1.

Explanation: Since its Targum is Alalta, and Alalta includes everything, like we say below.

(g)

Gemara: Shmuel's son commanded... what is called Alalta?

1.

Explanation: Rava should take only from the Alalta that Shmuel's son designated for him.

(h)

Gemara: He is forbidden only the five species [of grain].

1.

Explanation: Rav Yosef held that since Alalta is the Targum of Tevu'ah, it implies only the five species.

(i)

Gemara: Alalta implies everything.

1.

Explanation: Alalta it is an expression of coming, entering and improvement.

(j)

Gemara: This mixing resembles the mixing of the son of Rav Yosef bar Chama.

1.

Explanation: He mixes with one part [of wine] three parts of water. Rava said that any wine that cannot be mixed with three parts of water [and still taste like wine], it is not proper wine.

(k)

Gemara: What is the meaning of "umi'Midbar Matanah"?

1.

Explanation: Rav Yosef [asked this, for he] intended to warn Rava to be very humble.

THE RAN EXPLAINS THE GEMARA

(a)

Gemara: "Every canyon will be raised."

1.

Question: This is not written by the verse "umi'Nachli'el Bamos", which is in Chumash. "Kol Gei Yinasei" is in Nevi'im!

2.

Answer: Even so, since it is written that Hash-m lowers him like a canyon, he brings a proof that one who lowers himself, in the end he will ascend - "Kol Gei Yinasei."

(b)

Gemara: Ul'Inyan Halachah.

1.

Ruling: Rava's question was not settled. Therefore, one does not collect from rental of houses and boats, for the bearer of a document has the lower hand.

2.

Distinction: However, regarding Nedarim, we are stringent, and everything is included [in Alalta].

(c)

Gemara: If one vowed from Dagan, he is forbidden even dry Egyptians beans.

1.

Explanation: This is because it is piled up. R. Meir taught this.

(d)

Gemara: Chilka (wheat cut into two pieces).

1.

Translation: 'Chilka' is wheat cut into two pieces.

(e)

Gemara: Targis (wheat cut into three pieces).

1.

Translation: 'Targis' is wheat cut into three pieces.

(f)

Gemara: Tisani (wheat cut into four pieces).

1.

Translation: 'Tisani' is wheat cut into four pieces. So it says in Mo'ed Katan (13b).

(g)

Gemara: If he said 'growth of the year is Alai', all of these are forbidden.

1.

Limitation: This is when he forbade them to himself for a limited time, and he can fulfill this. It he forbade them forever, it is not a Neder at all, for it is impossible for him to fulfill it.

(h)

Gemara: Zamis (saltwater).

1.

Translation: 'Zamis' is saltwater.

(i)

Gemara: And he is permitted mushrooms and truffles.

1.

Explanation: They are not Peros of the land. However, they are included in Gidulei Karka, like the Gemara proceeds to explain.

(j)

Gemara: On mushrooms and truffles one says 'sheha'Kol Nihyeh bi'Dvaro.'

1.

Inference: They are not Gidulei Karka, for the Reisha of the Beraisa taught that on something that does not grow from the ground, one says sheha'Kol Nihyeh bi'Dvaro.

(k)

Gemara: They grow from the ground.

1.

Explanation: Therefore, when he said 'Gidulei Karka Alai', he is forbidden mushrooms and truffles. However, they nurture primarily from the air. Therefore, one blesses on them sheha'Kol.

3)

RAN DH Tosefta (4:3) [TRANSLATION: The Tosefta in Perek 4, Halachah 3.]
