(Mishnah): One who planted a row of five vines - Beis Shammai say that it's a vineyard (thereby prohibiting planting other seeds within 4 Amos of it); Beis Hillel say that it isn't a vineyard until there are two rows. (The later Mishnah will explain the nature of these rows.)

Therefore, one who sowed in the 4 Amos of a vineyard, Beis Shammai say that it has prohibited one row; Beis Hillel say that it prohibited two rows.

(Gemara): The latter case was when he planted (the prohibited species) along the entire row. If he only planted it opposite the middle vine (of the 5 vine row), Beis Shammai would prohibit the entire first row and Beis Hillel would prohibit 3 vines in each of the first two rows.

If he planted opposite the space between the two middle vines (of a 6 vine row), Beis Shammai would prohibit two on each side.

Question: Which vine is considered to be the fifth vine that is prohibited?

Answer: If the seeds are closer to one side, three on that side and two on the other side are prohibited; if not, on both sides three are prohibited. According to Beis Hillel, four seeds prohibit the four vines opposite them.

If he planted them opposite the corner (thereby possibly affecting all of the vines in the first row in both directions from the corner), according to Beis Shammai, which of those rows are prohibited? Both of them (thereby numbering 9 vines - four in each direction and the corner vine). According to Beis Hillel (6 vines are prohibited) - 2,2 and 1 in each direction from the corner (four of which overlap).

If he planted opposite the space between the first and second vine (of the first row), according to Beis Shammai, the entire first row is prohibited. According to Beis Hillel - 2,2, and 1 are prohibited (with the three in a line being along the row nearest to the seeds) ( .:: )
