DAF DISCUSSIONS - BAVA KAMA 116

AlexLebovits asked:

Does Hash-m address His Gifts?

[If after an agreement was made between the owners of the donkeys that were swept away by the river; that for saving the more expensive donkey, it's owner will replace the cheaper donkey.]

Rav Kahana asked Rav the following question:

If the cheaper donkey was washed ashore alive on it's own; What's the din?

Rav answered him It's a gift from Heaven!

Meaning, that the cheaper donkey's owner got it back as a gift from Heaven, AND he also gets paid for it from the other donkey owner!

My question is the following. How do we know that it's a gift from Heaven to it's original owner, perhaps it's a gift from Heaven indirectly to the other donkey owner, so that he will now NOT have to pay anything out of pocket for having had his donkey saved.

True , Hash-m sent a gift; but how do we know who Hash-m sent it to? Does Hash-m address his gifts?!

Perhaps we can even strengthen this question from Avraham's case with Melech Sedom, where Avraham felt that even when he was legally entitled to the booty from the war with the 4 kings and even when he himself had saved all the booty, still he didn't feel that it was a ?€?Gift from G-d' to him!

Rabbi Bloom Hello!

By the way, on the day I wrote you this question I got the following email from an old Chavrusa.

Several years ago, a rabbi from out-of-state accepted a call to a community in Houston , Texas . Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change.

As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, 'You'd better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it'.

Then he thought, 'Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway, the bus company gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a 'gift from G-d' and keep quiet'.

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, 'Here, you gave me too much change'.

The driver, with a smile, replied, 'Aren't you the new rabbi in town?'

'Yes' he replied.

'Well, I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I'll see you in Shul on Shabbos'.

When the rabbi stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, 'Oh Rebonoh Shel Olam (creator of the world), I almost sold a Yid for a quarter.'

Our lives are the only thing some people will ever read.

This is a really scary example of how much people watch us as JEWS, and will put us to the test! Always be on guard -- and remember -- You carry the name of Hash-m on your shoulders when you call yourself a 'JEW'.

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

I'm glad a friend forwarded this to me as a reminder.

So, I choose to forward it to you - my friend.

May Hash-m bless you; I hope you are having a wonderful day!

If you don't pass this on to anybody, nothing bad will happen; but, if you do, you will have reminded someone he/she is being watched.

May Hash-m bless you and your loved ones with all good things.
