1)

WHEN MAY ONE BLESS FOR OTHERS? (Yerushalmi Perek 6 Halachah 6 Daf 48b)

(a)

(Mishnah): If people were sitting, everyone blesses for himself. (The usual practice was to recline on beds while eating). If they reclined, one blesses for everyone.

(b)

If wine was brought during the meal, everyone blesses for himself. After the meal, one person blesses for everyone;

1.

[That same person] blesses on the incense, even though it is brought after the meal (after Birkas ha'Mazon).

(c)

(Gemara - R. Yehoshua ben Levi): I swear, our Mishnah [which allows one to bless for everyone only if they reclined] discusses guests, but a Ba'al ha'Bayis and his household, no.

(d)

(R. Chiya - Beraisa): Even a Ba'al ha'Bayis in his house [if they are sitting, everyone blesses for himself].

(e)

(Beraisa): The order of a meal - guests enter and sit on benches and soft chairs, until everyone enters. They bring wine, and everyone blesses for himself;

1.

They bring water, and everyone washes one hand (with which he holds his cup);

2.

They bring Parperes, and everyone blesses for himself;

3.

They ascended and reclined [on beds]. They bring wine. Even though he blessed on the first [cup], he must bless on the second. One blesses for everyone.

4.

They bring [water] for [washing] the hands. Even though everyone already washed one hand, they wash both hands [for bread].

5.

[After the bread] they bring Parperes, and one blesses for everyone;

6.

A guest may not enter after three Parperos (lest the host be ashamed that he lacks what to serve him).

(f)

(Mishnah): Sukah applies seven days. How is this? If he finished eating [on day seven], he may not dismantle his Sukah. Rather, he takes his Kelim down (people normally made Sukos on their roofs) from Minchah and onwards, due to honor of the last day of Yom Tov.

(g)

(R. Aba bar Kahana): [If one will eat in his Sukah on Shemini Atzeres,] he must disqualify his Sukah during the day (lest it looks like he adds to the Mitzvah).

(h)

(R. Yehoshua ben Levi): He must say Kidush in his house.

(i)

(R. Yakov bar Acha citing Shmuel): If one said Kidush in this house, and changed his mind and decided to eat in another house, he must say Kidush [again there].

(j)

(R. Acha citing R. Chinena citing R. Yehoshaya citing Rav): One who likes his Sukah [and wants to eat there on Shemini Atzeres at night], he says Kidush in this house, and ascends and eats in his Sukah [and he need not repeat Kidush].

(k)

(R. Avun): They do not argue. Rav discusses when he did not intend to eat in another house [when he said Kidush], and Shmuel discusses when he intended to eat in another house.

(l)

(R. Mana): Shmuel holds like R. Chiya, and R. Hoshayah holds like R. Yehoshua ben Levi.

(m)

Inference (R. Ami): [Just like they argue about whether or not intent to eat elsewhere helps for Kidush] they argue about Peros (whether or not one can bless here with intent to eat elsewhere - MEICHAL HA'MAYIM).

(n)

Question (to Ben Zoma): Why, when wine comes to them during the meal, everyone blesses for himself?

(o)

Answer (Ben Zoma): The gullet is not empty [during the meal. If one would bless for everyone, perhaps someone would answer while swallowing, and he could choke!]

(p)

Inference (R. Mana): One who sneezed during the meal, it is forbidden to say to him "Yeis' (he should be cured), due to mortal danger (choking).

(q)

(Mishnah): [The same person] blesses on the incense.

(r)

Question: What is the difference between incense and wine?

(s)

Answer: Everyone smells [incense immediately. If everyone blesses for himself, some will benefit before they bless.] Wine, one tastes it. (Others will not benefit before they bless.)

2)

BRACHOS ON FRAGRANCES (Yerushalmi Perek 6 Halachah 6 Daf 49b)

(a)

(R. Ze'ira citing R. Yirmeyah): Incense, once the cloud of smoke rises, he must bless (even though he did not smell it yet).

(b)

R. Yirmeyah wanted to test R. Ze'ira. He asked, what do we bless on fragrant oil (that absorbed scent from spices)? He said, 'Asher Nasan Rei'ach Tov ba'Shemen Arev.'

(c)

Question (R. Yirmeyah): What do we bless on Shiboles Nerd? (It is one of them the ingredients in the Ketores. It grows in capsules, like flax.)

(d)

Answer #1 (R. Ze'ira): 'Asher Nasan Rei'ach Tov ba'Atzei Besamim.'

(e)

Answer #2: Yitzchak bar Aba bar Machsiyah and Rav Chananel were sitting. One said, 'Baruch she'Nasan Rei'ach Tov ba'Atzei Besamim', and the other said, 'Baruch she'Nasan Rei'ach Tov ba'Esev ha'Aretz.'

(f)

Question (the one who said ba'Esev ha'Aretz, to the one who said ba'Atzei Besamim): Is it wood?!

(g)

Answer: It says "va'Titmenem b'Pishtei ha'Etz" - is it wood?! (Rather, since it grows in capsules, is called wood. The same applies to Shiboles Nerd. We explained this like SHA'AREI TORAS ERETZ YISRAEL.)

1.

They went to Rav's academy, and heard R. Chunah say in the name of Rav 'Asher Nasan Rei'ach Tov ba'Atzei Besamim.'

(h)

(Geneivah): Oil [to remove filth, even if it is scented], one need not bless on it.

(i)

(R. Yudan): This is even if [he puts much, and] it gathers in his hand.

(j)

(R. Chelbo citing Rav Huna citing Rav): One who sprinkles Alintis (wine scented through Afarsimon) in his house (to prevent dust from rising), he need not bless.

(k)

(Rav Chisda): On all [fragrances and incenses] he says 'Asher Nasan Rei'ach Tov ba'Atzei Besamim', except for musk (it is from sweat of a certain animal), on which he says 'Asher Nasan Rei'ach Tov b'Minei Besamim.'
