תוספות ד"ה ארבע נשים יפיפיות היו בעולם

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains why we did not list Chavah.)

קשה אמאי לא חשיב חוה

(a) Question: Why doesn't it list Chavah?

דהא אמרינן בפ' חזקת הבתים (ב"ב דף נח.) שרה לפני חוה כקוף בפני אדם

1. Citation (Bava Basra 58a): Sarah compared to Chavah was like a monkey compared to a person.

ויש לומר דלא חשיב אלא אותן הנולדות מאשה.

(b) Answer: We list only women born from a woman.

2) TOSFOS DH k'Shem she'Avadti mi'Beis Aba Kach Avadti Mimecha

תוספות ד"ה כשם שאבדתי מבית אבא כך אבדתי ממך

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains why he did not divorce her.)

וא"ת אמאי לא היה מגרשה ותהא מותרת להחזירנה

(a) Question: Why didn't he divorce her, and then she would be permitted to return to Mordechai (after willingly going to Achashverosh)?

י"ל לפי שכל מעשה הגט הוא ע"פ עדים והיה ירא פן יתפרסם הדבר למלכות.

(b) Answer: Everything about a Get requires witnesses. Mordechai feared lest the matter become known to the king.

1. Note: The Rashba holds that a Get in the husband's handwriting is Kosher without witnesses. He asked Tosfos' question, and answered that we need not resolve the Halachah with Agada. (We can explain the verse to mean that she was prepared to die.)

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains why she entered on the third day.)

בזכות תורה נביאים וכתובים

(a) Explanation #1: It was in the merit of Torah, Nevi'im and Kesuvim.

א"נ כהנים לוים וישראלים

(b) Explanation #2: It was [in the merit of] Kohanim, Leviyim and Yisraelim.

אי נמי משה ואהרן ומרים

(c) Explanation #3: It was [in the merit of] Moshe, Aharon, and Miryam.

אי נמי שלישי דמתן תורה.

(d) Explanation #4: It was [in the merit of] the third [month,] in which was Matan Torah.

נראה דמשום הכי נקט אמת לאשמועינן דבדין מרומה צריך לחקור העדים בטוב עד שיתבאר האמת ואז ידונו אותו לאמתו.

(a) Explanation: It seems that it mentions "Emes" to teach that in a Din Merumah (it seems that there is trickery) one must investigate the witnesses well until the truth is clarified, and then he judges it to its Emes.

5) TOSFOS DH Hachi Garsinan Al Tikri Shibarta Ela Shirbavta

תוספות ד"ה ה"ג אל תקרי שברת אלא שרבבת

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains the source of the word Shirbavta.)

[ל' אשתרבובי (סוכה ה.) ול"ג שריבבת].

(a) Explanation: Shirbavta is from the root Ishtarbuvi (lowered). The text does not say she'Rivavta (you increased).
