PROHIBITED USES OF SHEVIIS MONEY (Yerushalmi Sheviis Perek 8 Halachah 8 Daf 24a)

(a)

(Mishnah): A person may not buy slaves, fields or non-kosher animals with Sheviis money. If he did this, he must buy and eat food according to the laws of Sheviis corresponding to the amount of money he wrongly spent.

(b)

A person may not bring bird offerings brought by Zavim, Zavos or women who gave birth from Sheviis money. If he did this, he must buy and eat food according to the laws of Sheviis corresponding to the amount of money he wrongly spent.

A person may not rub vessels with oil of Sheviis. If he did, he must buy and eat food according to the laws of Sheviis corresponding to the amount of money he wrongly spent.

If a hide was rubbed with Sheviis oil, R. Eliezer says that it must be burned; the Chachamim say that he must buy and eat food according to the laws of Sheviis corresponding to the amount of money he wrongly spent.

(Gemara) (R. Yosi): This shows that it is prohibited to betroth a woman using Sheviis money; why would it be different to buying a maidservant?!

(Baraisa): Sheviis oil - one may not use it to rub on an oven or stove; one may not rub it on shoes or sandals; one may not rub his foot that's in his shoe or sandal (since the oil will also be absorbed by the shoe/sandal and it appears that he is rubbing oil for his shoe/sandal). But one may rub his foot and then put it into his shoe/sandal.

One may rub his body with oil and then roll around on a leather cover without concern, but one may not put oil on a marble board to roll around on it (as much of the oil will be wasted and it is not a normal way to rub the body). R. Shimon ben Gamliel permits it.

Question: (In the Mishnah, R. Akiva said that R. Eliezer was lenient, but he was not permitted to explain it.) What did R. Eliezer actually say about a hide rubbed with (Sheviis) oil?

Answer (R. Yosi): It should not be burned, and in fact, one who rubs it should himself be burned!

Eliezer would say that one who eats bread of a Kusi, it's as if he ate pig's meat) - this shows that it is forbidden to marry the daughter of an Am HaAretz. (Since she is in the habit of eating (Tevel) without separating Challah and without tithing, she might also feed her husband Tevel.)

(R. Chizkiyah citing R. Acha): R. Eliezer permitted the Chametz of Kusim immediately after Pesach.

(The Mishnah taught that if a bathhouse was heated with straw and stubble of Sheviis, it is permitted to bathe there.) This applies to regular bathhouses, but prestigious bathhouses are prohibited (since they might use even use edible Sheviis fruits to burn and heat the bathhouse).

(The Mishnah taught that) an important person should not bathe (even in a regular bathhouse). This is referring to an important person that others would wrongly learn from (to use even edible Sheviis fruits).

It is like the case of R. Yehoshua ben Levi who went from Lod to Beis Guvrin to bath in its bathhouse (rather than remain in Lod and use the bathhouse there).

R. Shimon ben Lakish was in Botzrah. He saw idolaters sprinkling wine to the idol that was close to the bathhouse. He told the Jews there, "Isn't it prohibited to bath there?!'' (since the bathhouse is being used to serve an idol). R. Shimon ben Lakish went and asked it to R. Yochanan. R. Yochanan said in the name of R. Shimon ben Yehotzedek that it's permitted since a public item cannot become prohibited through the actions of individuals.
