PREPARED MATTERS THAT ARE MUKTZAH (Yerushalmi Perek 3 Halachah 6 Daf 25a)

(a)

(Mishnah): One may not put a Kli under a Ner to catch [dripping] oil;

(b)

If one put a Kli there from before Shabbos, it is permitted;

1.

One may not benefit from the oil, for it is nor prepared [for use on Shabbos, it is Muktzeh].

(c)

(Gemara) Question (R. Chagai): If a lamp extinguished during the day, and he found out after dark [is the oil considered prepared]?

(d)

Question (Talmidim): If a lamp extinguished on Shabbos, and he found out on the following Shabbos [is the oil considered prepared]?

(e)

Answer (R. Yochanan): There is only one matter that is intact (ready for use) and is not considered Muchan. (Below we will say what it is.)

(f)

Question (R. Elazar): Oil in a lamp [burning at the start of Shabbos] is intact, and is not Muchan!

(g)

Answer (R. Yochanan): From the beginning he put it in so it will be consumed in the lamp. (His action shows that he did not intend to use it on Shabbos.)

(h)

Question (Reish Lakish): Wheat [kernels] that he planted are intact, and [surely you agree that] they are not Muchan!

(i)

Answer (R. Yochanan): From the beginning he put them [there] so they will be finished (decompose and sprout) in the land.

(j)

Question: Eggs (on which he sat a hen) for [the sake of getting] chicks are intact, and they are not Muchan!

(k)

Answer: From the beginning he put them [there] so they will become chicks.

(l)

Question (R. Yirmeyah): Decorations of a Sukah are intact, and they are not Muchan!

(m)

Answer: They are different, for Rav Avmari said in the name of R. Yosi that all seven days they are Batel to the Sukah. Afterwards, they are Muchan.

(n)

Question (R. Chinenah): Tufts [in which one did Hatmanah] that scattered are intact, and they are not Muchan!

(o)

Answer: Here (tufts) are Kelim (they are Muchan only if he showed that he intends to use them for Heter). What was said there (R. Yochanan's general rule) is for food.

(p)

Question (R. Nasa): Muktzah (figs and grapes that he put on the roof to dry) that became dry [before Shabbos], and he did not know (that they are dry), they are intact, and they are not Muchan!

1.

It seems that the answer is missing. It should say "indeed, this is the one matter that R. Yochanan said'', or like it says in Beitzah 4:1 "the only Muktzah is figs and grapes''! This is based on, but not exactly like, PNEI MEIR.

(q)

Question (R. Chiya bar Acha - Mishnah): One may tilt a basket on its side in front of chicks to enable them to climb or descend on it. (A Beraisa teaches that one may not move it while they are on it. According to R. Yochanan, it should be Muchan!

1.

Note: MAR'EH HA'PANIM (and others) say that this question belongs in this Sugya, but he says that the Gemara does not answer at all. Seemingly, it belongs here, and the following answers it! However, we must say that R. Chiya had not heard this answer, which was given to R. Chinenah's question.

(r)

Answer: Here [baskets are] Kelim. What was said there (R. Yochanan's general rule) applies to food.
