(a)A Lechi is a pole or plank that is at least ten Tefachim high. It is placed at the entrance to a Mavoy (alley), to serve as a Heker (reminder) to the people who live in the Mavoy so that they do not transfer objects from the Mavoy to the adjacent Reshus ha'Rabim.

(b)Chazal prohibited carrying objects within a Mavoy, even if it has three walls (and is therefore a Reshus ha'Yachid), and only the fourth side is open to Reshus ha'Rabim. Their concern was that people may mistake it for a Reshus ha'Rabim. With the Lechi, which serves to distinguish the Mavoy from Reshus ha'Rabim, in conjunction with a Shituf (see Background to 6b, #11b), Chazal permit carrying within the Mavoy.

(c)Another method for the rectification of a Mavoy is Korah (a beam, one Tefach thick). The Korah was placed horizontally across the top of the entrance to the Mavoy. The Halachic difference between Lechi and Korah is that when a courtyard is equipped with a Lechi, carrying is permitted from the inner edge of the Lechi inward. With a Korah, carrying is permitted from the outer edge of the Korah inward. The Lechi serves only as a Heker, and not a Mechitzah. The Korah, however, serves as either a Heker or a Mechitzah, and the area is considered enclosed by the edge of the Korah, which is considered to be Yored v'Sosem (descend and enclose). (a)Minchah Gedolah refers to the time when the sun (noticeably) begins to rest ("Nachah") and its light begins to wane. This occurs one half hour after midday (see Ramban, Shemos 12:6).

(b)In the Beis ha'Mikdash, the Tamid Shel Bein ha'Arbayim (daily afternoon sacrifice) could be offered starting from Minchah Gedolah (See Pesachim 58a).

(a)Minchah Ketanah refers to the end of the day, when the sun begins to set. This occurs at nine and one half Sha'os Zemaniyos into the day. (A Halachic hour, or Sha'ah Zemanis, is calculated by dividing the amount of time between sunrise and sunset by 12.)
