WILL TORAH BE FORGOTTEN?
Why will Torah be forgotten from Yisrael?
Iyun Yakov #1: Rav himself taught (Vayikra Rabah 13:3) "Kol Imras Eloka Tzerufah" - the Mitzvos were given to Yisrael to refine them. In the future there will be great refinement - "v'Etzrof ka'Bor Sigayich" (Sanhedrin 98a). This is why Mitzvos will be Batel in the future (Nidah 61).
Iyun Yakov #2: Mashi'ach will come only when there is no money in the wallet. The heart depends on this, and "b'Lev Navon Tanu'ach Chochmah." If there is no flour, there is no Torah (Avos 3:17). Amidst the afflictions, Torah will be forgotten.
Anaf Yosef citing Sama d'Chayei: Had we heard Torah from Hash-m, we would not forget it. Rather, we heard from man, so it is forgotten. "Torah Tzivah Lanu" - we heard the first two Dibros from Hash-m, and the other 611 (the Gematri'a of Torah) Mitzvos from Moshe. Torah (those 611) will be forgotten, but not the first two.
We learn that Torah will be forgotten from "v'Avdah Chochmas Chachamav." Why were the other verses brought?
Maharsha: If not for "v'Hifla Hash-m Es Makosecha", we would not understand "Hineni Yosef Lehafli", nor the double expression "Haflei va'Fele." However, since "v'Hifla" in the Tochachah is forgetting Torah, also the latter verse in Nevi'im is. The Tochachah hints to one forgetting - perhaps it is forgetting the hidden part of Torah! The Navi reveals that the forgetting will be double - also revealed Torah, like it says that they will seek "Es Devar Hash-m v'Lo Yimtza'u." A woman will take a loaf... "V'Avdah Chochmas Chachamav" is revealed Torah; "u'Vinas Nevonav Tistatar" is hidden Torah (Nistar). (NOTE: What is the source that "v'Hifla" in the Tochachah is forgetting Torah? - PF)
Etz Yosef citing Iyei ha'Yam: We asked 'what is this Hafla'ah?', for the Makos in the Torah are not qualitatively different than other afflictions, just they are greater. Hafla'ah refers to a qualitative distinction! We answer that it is forgetting Torah. The other Makos pain the physical, and apply also to other nations. Forgetting Torah pains the Nefesh, and applies only to Yisrael.
Rif (on the Ein Yakov) 130a: We asked 'what is this Hafla'ah?', for it should have said Hifli (Hiph'il). Rather, v'Hifla implies as if Hash-m is affected. He created the world via Torah - when it is forgotten, it is as if He is forgotten. Chazal expounded "va'Tishkach Toras Elokecha Eshkach Banecha Gam Ani"- when Torah is forgotten, it is as if He is forgotten (Shir ha'Shirim Rabah 1:1).
Daf Al ha'Daf citing Shelal David (Vayelech): One might have thought that "v'Hifla Hash-m Es Makosecha" teaches that Torah will be totally forgotten; there will be no Chachamim. "V'Avdah Chochmas Chachamav" teaches that there will be Chachamim, just their Chochmah is lost. They will see that the generation does not esteem it, so they will conceal it (Sanhedrin 97a). The argument in Kerem b'Yavneh was known; Rav teaches that all agree that there will always be Chochmah. This is why Rav Huna called this 'one of Rav's great teachings.'
Why was it called Kerem b'Yavneh?
Rashi: They sat in rows, like in a vineyard.
What is the source that "Devar Hash-m" refers to Halachah and prophecy?
Rashi: "Lehagid Lachem Es Devar Hash-m" is Halachah. "Devar Hash-m Asher Hayah El Hoshe'a" is prophecy.
Maharal: Devar Hash-m is Torah, Nevi'im and Kesuvim. Halachah corresponds to Torah. Nevu'ah is Nevi'im.
What is the source that "Devar Hash-m" refers to the Ketz?
Rashi: I do not know.
Tosfos: It says "Lichlos Devar Hash-m mi'Pi Yirmeyah" regarding the 70 years of Galus - this is the Ketz.
Maharal: This is wrong. Ketz is the latest possible time for Moshi'ach to come!
Maharal: Devar Hash-m is Torah, Nevi'im and Kesuvim. The Ketz corresponds to Kesuvim, for it is in Sefer Daniel, like it says in Megilah 3a. He wanted to translate Kesuvim; a Bas Kol told him not to [for the Ketz is in Daniel].
Iyun Yakov: "Kevod Elokim Hester Davar."
Etz Yosef citing Iyei ha'Yam: The Ketz is hidden from all. Only Hash-m knows it - therefore it is called Devar Hash-m. ]
Etz Yosef citing Ramas Shmuel: Hash-m revealed the time of Mashi'ach to His heart, but not to His mouth (NOTE: our text in Sanhedrin 99a says 'limbs'.) "Lishmo'a Devar Hash-m" is the Ketz - He will say it to His mouth, and the Ge'ulah will come.
What was the question 'this is explicitly written!'?
Rashi: Even if they forgot, they can read the Torah and know!
Rav Elyashiv: Noda bi'Yhudah asked, why must she take the loaf to the Beis Midrash? It suffices to tell what happened! Rather, some people rule based on Ru'ach ha'Kodesh. This is forgetting Torah - they do not know to answer based on Halachah. They need to have the loaf in front of them, to smell Ru'ach ha'Tum'ah or Ru'ach ha'Taharah.
What was the question 'also this is explicit, like a Mishnah teaches!'? We said that Torah will be forgotten!
Chochmas Shlomo: It means that this is clear from a verse, like a Mishnah teaches.
Why is the oven a Rishon?
Rashi: It becomes Tamei from the air - "El Tocho", and it is Metamei food in it.
Rav Elyashiv: Rav Huna called this 'one of Rav's great teachings.' It is a harsh teaching! Rather, we see what Rav considers forgetting Torah. They knew the entire Torah, except for a particular law of Tum'ah, i.e. what is a Rishon, and what is a Sheni. This is at a time when there is still Taharah via Efer Parah Adumah. They still had it after the Churban, and ate Terumah.
What is the source of the argument about whether or not Torah will be forgotten?
Maharsha: Rav explains that "Ki Lo Sishakach mi'Pi Zar'o" refers only to Shiras Ha'azinu. R. Shimon holds that it refers to the entire Torah. Also "Kisvu Lachem Es ha'Shirah ha'Zos" teaches that one must write a Sefer Torah.
Iyun Yakov: If the Torah was given in the merit of the Avos, there is an opinion that Zechus Avos ceased, but Bris Avos did not. There is a Bris with the lips - one who reviews his learning, he does not forget - "va'Ani Zos Brisi... Lo Yamushu..."
Rav Elyashiv #1: The Mechilta says, "when your children will say to you, what is this Avodah to you" - Torah will be forgotten! This is bad tidings. R. Shimon says, the evil is that some children will not even know what is the Avodah of Pesach. There will be someone to explain to them
Rav Elyashiv #2: "Ki Lo Sishakach mi'Pi Zar'o" is a Torah verse; it refers to written Torah. R. Shimon agrees that oral Torah will be forgotten, and there will be arguments.
Daf Al ha'Daf citing Reish Likutei Halachos: The last letters of "Ki Lo Sishakach mi'Pi Zar'o" are those of Yochai. Via Zar'o (his son R. Shimon, who wrote the Zohar, via which Yisrael will leave Galus), Torah will not be forgotten.
What is clear Halachah?
Rashi: Its reasons are known, and there is no argument about it.
Why does it say 'in one place'?
Maharsha: In all the places mentioned (from sea to sea, from north to east) it will not be found.
