IR SHEL ZAHAV

ולא בעיר של זהב. מאי בעיר של זהב רבה בר בר חנה אמר רבי יוחנן ירושלים דדהבא כדעבד ליה רבי עקיבא לדביתהו: ':
Translation: A woman may not go out with Ir Shel Zahav. What is this? Rabah bar bar Chanah said, it is Yerushalayim of gold, like R. Akiva made for his wife.
(a)

What is Yerushalayim of gold?

1.

Rashi (57a): It is a pin on which a city is depicted.

i.

Tosfos: This is wrong. It says (Sotah 49b) that crowns of Kalos are Ir Shel Zahav. This implies that it is made like a crown!

2.

Tosfos: It is like a crown. Even though it says in Sotah (49b) that in the siege of Titus, they decreed against crowns of Chasanim and Kalos, and here we forbid only on Shabbos, we can say that the decree was only for Chasanim and Kalos.

i.

Rashash: This was the Gemara's question! It asked, what is Ir Shel Zahav? Is it not a crown, which is forbidden even on weekdays, due to the Churban?! It answers, it is Yerushalayim of gold. The form of Yerushalayim is permitted (perhaps due to "Im Eshkachech Yerushalayim"), like R. Akiva made for his wife. This shows that it is permitted!

(b)

What is the significance that R. Akiva made Ir Shel Zahav for his wife?

1.

Rav Elyashiv (59b): The Yerushalmi says that Raban Gamliel's wife asked him to make one for her, and he replied, since she did not sell her hair to enable him to learn, like R. Akiva's wife did for him, she is not worthy of it. Surely Raban Gamliel had money for it; he refused, for it would be haughty for her to wear it.

Translation: People told Rav that a great Chacham came to Neharda'a; he limps, and he permits Kalila. Rav said, it must be that [in Eretz Yisrael] R. Efes died, R. Chanina was appointed Rosh Yeshivah, and Levi came here because he had no one to sit by him. Perhaps R. Chanina died, R. Efes was still Rosh Yeshivah, and Levi came here because he had no one to learn with! No - if so, Levi would have learned inside the Yeshivah. Also, it was inevitable that R. Chanina would become Rosh Yeshivah, for Rebbi decreed before his death 'Chanina b'Ribi Chama will head the Yeshivah.' It says about Tzadikim "v'Sigzar Omer va'Yakam Lach".
(c)

What is Kalila?

1.

Rashi: It is an ornament tied from ear to ear. It can be a gold plate. Some make it from silk spun with gold.

(d)

Why did Levi limp?

1.

Rashi: He showed to Rebbi Kidah (prostrating).

(e)

Why did Levi have no one to sit by him?

1.

Rashi: Even though Rebbi said that R. Chanina will be Rosh Yeshivah, R. Chanina did not accept, because R. Efes was two years older. R. Chanina was greater than him, and did not want to enter the Yeshivah and be submissive to him, so he sat outside. Levi sat with R. Chanina to honor him. Now that R. Efes died and R. Chanina headed the Yeshivah, Levi had no one to sit by outside.

(f)

We said that had R. Chanina died, and R. Efes was still Rosh Yeshivah, Levi would have learned in the Yeshivah. Why would he not learn inside now that R. Chanina was Rosh Yeshivah?

1.

Rashi: R. Efes was older than Levi; R. Chanina had no attribute over Levi - not age or Chochmah.

i.

Ha'Boneh: There are levels and orders among people, stars and angels. Also Chachamim have levels, based on Chochmah and age. Where there is order, there is life; where there is no order, there is death. (NOTE: Levi pained R. Efes via not entering when R. Efes was the head; due to this he was banished from the Heavenly academy, until he was allowed to enter in the merit of Shmuel (Berachos 18b). - PF)

(g)

Why do we learn from that Hash-m fulfills Tzadikim's decrees from "v'Sigzar Omer va'Yakam Lach"? We could learn from the Chumash! Shemos Rabah (21:2) says, Hash-m told Moshe "Mah Titz'ak Elai? Daber", and I will do!

1.

Daf Al ha'Daf: R. M. Y. Klein left this difficult. (NOTE: Perhaps there is different, for Bereishis Rabah 5:5 expounds l'Eisano - there was a Tenai from the six days of creation that the sea will split. Also, Hash-m told Moshe only to tell Yisrael to go; He did not say that He will do anything Moshe says in order to save Yisrael. - PF)
