SEWING ON CHOL HAMOED (Yerushalmi Halachah 8 Daf 6b)

(a)

(Mishnah): An amateur may sew regularly and a professional tailor may sew in a Mechalev (doglike) way.

(b)

One may Mesareg the beds.

(c)

R. Yosi: One may even Memateach. (All of these terms will be explained in the Gemara.)

(d)

(Gemara - From the House of R. Yanai): What is sewing 'regularly'? Making many stitches in the garment and then pulling the thread. (One act of pulling thereby completes many stitches.) Mechalev is stitch by stitch.

(e)

R. Yochanan: 'Regularly' means stitch by stitch, Mechalev means leaving spaces between each stitch.

(f)

Support (of R. Yochanan): Strap makers are Mechalev on Chol Hamoed.

1.

If you say that Mechalev means stitch by stitch, this is the way that they usually sew. Rather, Mechalev must mean leaving spaces between each stitch.

(g)

Question: What is the definition of an amateur and what is the definition of a professional?

(h)

Answer (R. Yosi ben Chanina): An amateur is one who does not know how to sew a hem evenly (rather, one side is narrow and one is wide).

(i)

R. Simon: The Mishnah is discussing a person who makes bumps in the garment when he sows it.

(j)

'Mematchin' the beds etc. - R. Yasa said that there is a dispute between Chizkiyah and .Yochanan. Chizkiyah said that Sirug is weaving the support ropes of a bed in two directions; Mituach is weaving in only one direction. R. Yochanan said that Sirug means weaving them in one direction; Mituach means pulling it taut if it had loosened.

(k)

R. Chiya bar Ba: All agree that Sirug means weaving in two directions. They disagree over Mituach - Chizkiyah said that it means weaving in one direction and R. Yochanan said that it means pulling it taut if it had loosened.

(l)

R. Yasa instructed Shmuel son of R. Chaninah to weave (Sirug) in two directions. (This followed R. Yasa's understanding of the dispute.) We do not know whether he was following Chizkiyah or R. Chiya bar Ba.

(m)

R. Bun bar Chiya to R. Zeirah: There is a Mishnah that teaches that Sirug means weaving in two directions...

(n)

Mishnah (in Maseches Keilim): When a person begins to weave a bed (i.e. has made three knots) and the rope is still long, it is still considered attached to the bed. (Therefore, one who touches such a rope of a Tameh bed will become Tameh since this rope will soon be part of the bed itself.)

(o)

Question: Could this be referring to weaving in only one direction? (It could not then refer to knots, which require ropes coming from two directions.)

(p)

Question: Is it permitted (for a person who already owns a bed) to act deceptively (by claiming that he prefers to have a new bed) and weave a new bed on Chol Hamoed?

(q)

Answer (Rav Hoshiyah): It is prohibited, just as a person who already owns flour cannot grind more.

(r)

R. Zeirah to R. Yona: Go out and buy us beans to grind on Chol Hamoed.

(s)

R. Yona: Do we have millstones that grind on Chol Hamoed?

(t)

R. Zeirah became angry with R. Yona, as he held that it was permitted.

2)

SETTING UP AN OVEN AND STOVE (Yerushalmi Halachah 9 Daf 6b)

(a)

(Mishnah): One may set up an oven or stove on Chol Hamoed.

(b)

R. Yehudah: One may not chisel out grooves in the millstone so that it can grind effectively.

(c)

Gemara - Beraisa (R. Chalafta bar Shaul): As long as he does not build a new oven.

(d)

Beraisa: To a new oven or stove, one may not - rub them with oil, polish them with a cloth, close them up using cold water (after they were fired up); and if he cools it in order to be able to place a pot there, it is permitted.

(e)

Support (Beraisa): A new oven or stove is viewed like any other utensil and may be moved around the courtyard.

(f)

Under pressing circumstances, R. Yudan bei R. Yishmael instructed bringing a new oven from the manufacturer to use it to cook up a pot of food on Yom Tov.
