PESACHIM 21 - Dedicated l'Iluy Nishmas Reb Aharon Dovid ben Elimelech Shmuel Kornfeld (Muncasz/Israel/New York), who passed away on 3 Av 5761, by his daughter, Shifra, and family. May his love for Torah and for Eretz Yisrael be preserved in all of his descendants.

SUMMARY

1. The Mishnah discusses what one may do during the period of time in which he is still permitted to eat Chametz.

2. There is a dispute about how one must dispose of Chametz.

3. The Gemara explains that our Mishnah follows the opinion of Raban Gamliel (11b).

4. There is a dispute about when one may sell Chametz to a Nochri.

5. There is a dispute about whether the standard Torah prohibition against eating something includes also benefiting from it.

A BIT MORE

1. He may feed the Chametz to his animals and birds, or sell it to a Nochri and derive benefit from it. However, he may not do any of these things when he may no longer eat Chametz.

2. Rebbi Yehudah: It must be burned. Chachamim: It may be torn into small pieces and thrown into the wind or into the sea.

3. It cannot be interpreted according to the opinion of Rebbi Yehudah (11b), because Rebbi Yehudah maintains that one may not eat Chametz in the fifth hour but he may feed it to his animals. The Gemara proves that the Mishnah is also unlike Rebbi Meir's opinion (11b).

4. Beis Shamai and Rebbi Yehudah: One may not sell Chametz to a Nochri if he knows that it is going to be extant over Pesach, as the Mitzvah is to destroy it from the world. Beis Hillel: The Mitzvah is to rid the Chametz from one's possession. It may still exist in the world (in the possession of a Nochri).

5. Chizkiyah: When the Torah prohibits eating a certain item, it does not mean to prohibit also benefiting from it unless the Torah specifically states so. Rebbi Avahu: The Torah forbids benefiting from an item whenever it forbids eating it.
