SUMMARY

1. The Gemara cites a Mishnah explaining the law of a "Yad" regarding Tum'ah.

2. The Gemara cites a Mishnah explaining the law of a "Shomer" regarding Tum'ah.

3. The Gemara cites a Mishnah explaining the law of an item that is attached to another item, but is not a Yad or Shomer,

4. There is an argument regarding the minimum size an item must be in order for it to have a Yad.

5. There is an argument regarding the minimum size an item must be in order for it to have a Shomer.

A BIT MORE

1. A "Yad" - "handle" refers to the status of an item that is attached to something that can acquire Tum'ah, such as an end of a dry bone with no marrow that has a piece of meat on the other end of the bone. The law of a Yad maintains that it is a conduit rendering the meat Tamei (if the Yad touches Tum'ah), or causing the meat to make other things Tamei. It does not combine with the meat to equal an amount that would become Tamei.

2. A "Shomer" - "guard" is the status of an item that guards something that can acquire Tum'ah, such as skin on a piece of meat. The law of a Shomer is that it is a conduit to make the meat Tamei (if the Shomer touches Tum'ah), or to make the meat make other things Tamei, and it combines with the meat to make an amount that becomes Tamei.

3. This item (such as a weak bone that cannot be used as a handle) that is attached (for example) to a piece of meat is not a conduit to make the meat Tamei or pass Tum'ah onto something else.

4. Rav: An item that is less than the size of an olive cannot have a Halachic Yad. Rebbi Yochanan: It can have a Yad.

5. Rav: An item that is less than the size of a bean cannot have a Halachic Shomer. Rebbi Yochanan: It can have a Shomer.
