ZEVACHIM 99 (TISHA B'AV) - Dedicated by Rabbi Dr. Eli Turkel of Ra'anana, Israel, in memory of his father, Reb Yisrael Shimon ben Shlomo ha'Levi Turkel, whose Yahrzeit is on 10 Av.

SUMMARY

1. Only a Kohen who is fit to perform the Avodah receives a portion of the Korbanos.
 
2. A Ba'al Mum is an exception; he receives a portion of the Korbanos even though he is not fit to do the Avodah.
 
3. A Ba'al Mum who is also Tamei does not receive a portion of the Korbanos.
 
4. A Kohen Gadol may perform the Avodah while he is an Onen, but he may not eat from the Korbanos, and he does not receive a portion of the Korbanos.
 
5. A Kohen Tamei does not receive a portion of a Korban Tzibur.
 
6. An Onen and a Mechusar Kipurim require Tevilah for Kodesh.
 
7. One who took his mind off of guarding his body from becoming Tamei needs Haza'ah on the third and seventh day, from the Mei Chatas before he may touch Kodshim.
 
8. A person was carrying a basket on his shoulder with a spade inside the basket, and he had in mind to guard the basket from Tum'ah, but not the spade. Only the spade is Tamei for Hekdesh.
 
9. One who eats a Shelishi of Terumah may not eat Terumah, but he may touch Terumah.
 
10. An Onen may eat a Korban Pesach on the night after his Aninus, but he may not eat other Kodshim.
 
11. Rebbi Yirmeyah mi'Difti says that on the night of the fifteenth of Nisan, an Onen may eat all Korbanos.
 
12. Rav Asi says that an Onen may eat Kodshim on the night after his Aninus, if the death was on the previous day.
 
13. Rebbi Shimon says that an Onen may not send his Korbanos to be brought in the Beis ha'Mikdash on his behalf, with the exception of a Korban Pesach.

A BIT MORE

1. A Tevul Yom, Mechusar Kipurim, and an Onen do not receive a portion of the Korbanos since they are not fit to perform the Avodah.
 
2. A Gezeiras ha'Kasuv teaches that a Ba'al Mum receives a portion in the Korbanos, whether he has a permanent blemish or a temporary blemish.
 
3. Although a Ba'al Mum is not fit for the Avodah and yet he receives a portion of the Korbanos, if he is Tamei he is unable to eat from the Korbanos, and therefore he also receives no portion of them.
 
4. A Kohen Hedyot may not perform the Avodah while he is an Onen. A Gezeiras ha'Kasuv teaches that a Kohen Gadol may perform the Avodah while he is an Onen, but he may not eat from the Korbanos.
 
5. Although a Korban Tzibur may be brought b'Tum'ah and, therefore, a Tamei is fit for the Avodah, nevertheless since he may not eat from the Korban he does not receive a portion to eat later when he is Tahor.
 
6. Rebbi Aba bar Mamal says that an Onen and Mechusar Kipurim require Tevilah only for eating Hekdesh, but not for touching Hekdesh.
 
7. Since he took his mind off of guarding himself from Tum'ah, there is a concern that he became Tamei from a corpse, which requires him to have the Mei Chatas (the water with the ashes of the Parah Adumah) sprinkled on him on the third and seventh days.
 
8. The spade is not Metamei the basket, because one utensil cannot be Metamei another utensil. Even if there is food in the basket, the spade is not Metamei the food if he guarded the spade from Tum'ah, but not from something which renders it Pasul from being used for Kodshim.
 
9. The Rabanan decreed that one who eats a Shelishi of Terumah becomes a Shelishi like the Terumah itself. Therefore, although he may not eat Terumah, he may touch Terumah, since Terumah does not become Tamei passed the level of a Shelishi.
 
10. An Onen may not eat Kodshim, Min ha'Torah, on the day of his Aninus and on the following night, according to Rebbi Yehudah. According to Rebbi Shimon, the prohibition to eat Kodshim on the following night is only mid'Rabanan, and therefore he may eat a Korban Pesach, since failure to eat it incurs a Chiyuv Kares. The Rabanan did not apply their decree in the case of a Chiyuv Kares.
 
11. Since the Rabanan did not apply their decree in the case of the Korban Pesach, the Onen may eat other Korbanos on that night as well.
 
12. A person is regarded as an Onen on the day of burial, even if the death was on the previous day. However, an Onen is prohibited from eating Kodshim on the night after his Aninus if the burial and the death occurred on the same day.
 
13. He may not even send wine for Nesachim, or wood for the Mizbe'ach or Levonah, but he may send his Korban Pesach, according to Rebbi Shimon.
