PRAYING FOR A FRIEND
Someone who prays for his friend and is in need of the same request he will be answered first. Avraham Avinu prayed for Avimelech and he was answered first and Hashem Yisbarach granted him a son. The Maharal ask that Hashem Yisbarach had previously already promised Avraham a son. The Maharal answers that Tzadikim are always concerned that maybe their merits have been diminished because of the great Chesed that Hashem constantly does for them. Consequently, after Avraham Avinu was victorious against the four kings he was concerned that he had already received all of his reward and therefore Hashem Yisbarach promised him that his reward is great. Consequently, if not for the fact that Avraham Avinu prayed for Avimelech although Avraham would have been granted a son in any case however the gift of a son would have diminished his merits to some extent. However, now that Avraham Avinu prayed for Avimelech he deserved to be answered with the same request for himself and consequently when he had a son it did not diminish his merits at all.
