Ask A
Question

SUMMARY

1. If a person says to his wife, "I affirm all vows you will make until I get to a certain place," his statement is invalid.

2. There is a dispute about the law when the husband says, "I nullify all vows you will make until I get to a certain place."

3. Rebbi Eliezer: If a husband can nullify his wife's vows when she has already made them, certainly he can nullify them before she makes them!

4. The Gemara is unsure about whether Rebbi Eliezer means the vows his wife makes are valid but become null, or they never were valid.

5. The Gemara tries to answer this question based on various other statements of Rebbi Eliezer.

A BIT MORE

1. Everyone agrees that a husband cannot affirm vows that have not yet been made.

2. Rebbi Eliezer: The vows are nullified. Chachamim: This is an invalid statement.

3. Chachamim: The verse states, "Her husband will uphold them, her husband will negate them." This teaches that only vows that can be upheld, meaning that that have already been made, can be negated.

4. The difference is in a case where a second person heard her making a vow and said, "I will do as she does." If her vow is totally invalid, the second person has not made a vow. If her vow is valid and then becomes void, the second person's vow is binding.

5. For example, it tries to deduce the answer from Rebbi Eliezer's statement in our Mishnah, but concludes by saying that his statement does not clearly indicate whether they are valid at first or not.
