DAF DISCUSSIONS - CHULIN 67

Janice Harrison asked:

Dear sirs, Since Whale meat is kosher, and concidered fish, can one cook it in milk? It seems to me that that section of the Talmud should be looked over and perhaps reworked. Also, are there any receips for grasshopper.

Janice Harrison, New York, NY

The Kollel replies:

1. A whale is not a fish, and is not Kosher. When the Talmud discusses the "Leviathan," it is not referring to a whale.

2. Yes, there are some very tasty recipes for cooking locusts. However, they are found primarily in the cookbooks of Yemenite Jews, who have a tradition about which locusts are Kosher (see http://zootorah.com/essays/mainframe2.html ).
