1. Joshua Danziger asks:

Hello kollel!

Conceptual q. 7th chapter of arachin. Why would anyone make a sde achuza hekdesh and risk losing it permanently? Since you never have to make something hekdesh, rather than going through a convoluted race to be podeh in time why would you ever donate your sde achuza?

Thanks,

Josh

2. The Kollel replies:

Shalom Josh,

It's great to hear from you! True, it may not be recommended to be Makdish a Sdeh Achuzah, but people still might do so out of strong religious emotion, for example, in a moment of distress, as an expression of commitment or devotion to Hash-m. In a situation like that, a person might pledge something especially precious, such as a field. See, for example, Shulchan Aruch, YD 203:5. The Torah therefore provides a framework that both recognizes the sincerity of the act, and yet allows for redemption within a defined time.

Bi'Verachah,

Yishai Rasowsky
