DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 20

Mark Bergman asked:

The Mishna says that a child must daven (Tefilla) must need not say Shema. Rashi says that there is no mitzvah of Chinuch on the father regarding Shema, as he is not around at the appropriate time.

How then can there be a mitzva of Chinuch regarding Tefilla - the times are very similar (surely we can't mean that the father is around just in the fourth hour of the day when Tefilla applies but Shema doesn't?!)

[Anyway, which Shema are we talking about, and when is the father presumed

to be "Motzuy" and when not?]

The Kollel replies:

The Tiferes Yisrael explains that the reason the child is Patur from Kerias Sh'ma (or the father from saying it with him) is because the CHILD is usually not arround and still asleep at that time of the morning. However, since the Amidah may be said for at least one hour longer, the child is bound to be up and the father is therefore required to say it with him.
