They implored that if anyone knows the Halachah, he should come forth at once, and they were directed to Hillel ha'Bavli, who revealed the forgotten Halachah. As a result, the Bnei Beseirah stepped down from their post as Nesi'im and appointed Hillel (who was also from the family of David ha'Melech) in their place, as the Gemara recounts in Pesachim 66a (see MAHARSHA ibid.).
