1)

DOUGH IN A KNEADING BOWL (Yerushalmi Halachah 2 Daf 20b)

(a)

(Mishnah): Dough that is in the cracks of a kneading bowl (used to strengthen the cracks) - if there is a k'Zayis (olive's worth) in one place, one must destroy it; less than that is annulled as it is such a small amount.

(b)

The same is true for Tum'ah - if he is particular about it (that he intends to remove it), it is a Chatzizah (separation); if he wants it to remain there, it is considered as part of the trough.

(c)

Cheresh (flattened or hard) dough is prohibited if other dough that was kneaded at that time became Chametz.

(d)

(Gemara - Chevraya/ R. Simon): Even if the k'Zayis of Chametz is in more than one place, if it can all be peeled off at the same time (as there is a thin piece of dough connecting the two parts), it must be destroyed.

(e)

Question: This refers to moist dough, but what is the law for dry dough (which would crumble if one attempted to peel it off)?

(f)

Answer: It is viewed as wet dough - if when wet it could be peeled off at the same time, it must be destroyed.

(g)

(R. Yirmiyah): If there are two half k'Zeisim in a house, the house does not connect them. If they are in a vessel, the vessel connects them.

(h)

Question: Surely the Mishnah taught that, "less than that is annulled as it is such a small amount''. (This means that even a vessel does not connect them?!)

(i)

Answer: Here (when they connect), the dough is not stuck to the bowl; here (Mishnah - when they do not connect), the dough is stuck to the bowl.

(j)

Question #1: The Mishnah taught that a k'Zayis must be destroyed. If the quantity was reduced, are the remains annulled (and do not need to be destroyed) or since it had been a k'Zayis and obligated to be destroyed, the remains must also be destroyed?

(k)

Question #2: Until how far away do the pieces still connect? The students suggested that if the k'Zayis is within the majority of the kneading bowl, the pieces still connect; but more than that, they do not connect. If it was reduced (that the k'Zayis was no longer within the majority of the bowl), are the remains annulled or since it had been obligated to be destroyed, the remains must also be destroyed?

(l)

Question: There R. Yirmiyah quoted R. Zeira saying that if there are two half-k'Zeisim in a house, the house does not connect them; but if in a vessel, the vessel connects them; and here he said this? (Note: According to the Korban Ha'Edah (and others), this question is not printed in its correct place and should appear later in Halachah 3).

(m)

(The Mishnah had stated): "If he is particular about it (that he intends to remove it), it is a Chatzizah (separation)'' - for immersion in a Mikvah; if he is not, it is not a Chatzizah for immersion in a Mikvah.

(n)

This law (of Chatzizah) about immersing the bowl also applies to sprinkling the ashes of the Red Heifer.

(o)

If a Tamei item touched the dough, it is not considered that it touch the bowl itself (even if there is a k'Zayis of dough).

(p)

Source: The Mishnah stated, "if he wants it to remain there, it is considered as part of the bowl'' - (if not) it is considered like the actual body of the bowl. (Note: The words "if not'' are removed from the text according to Rav Chaim Kanievski).

(q)

(R''SBL): Rebbi taught that if excrement was stuck on the underside of a chair, it is a connection for Tum'ah but not for sprinkling.

(r)

(R''SBL quoting R. Shimon bar Kahana): A hanging limb, a hanging nail, excrement under a chair, the stone wedged into a hollowed pumpkin as a weight and pieces attached to pillows; R. Yosi bar R. Bun adds even hops that were picked (and later a flower sprouted on it); all of these are a connection for Tum'ah but not for sprinkling.

(s)

Question: What is the difference between Tum'ah and sprinkling?

(t)

Answer (R. Ila): Concerning sprinkling, the Pasuk states (Bamidbar 19,18), "And he shall sprinkle upon the tent and upon the vessels'' - upon whatever is the vessel itself; but here (concerning Tum'ah) the Pasuk states (Vayikra 11,38), "(it is Tamei) to you'' - all that is needed for you (this includes all parts of vessels that are needed). (Note: Rav Chaim Kanievski has difficulty resolving the correct text of the words "ועל כל המקיימין'').

(u)

Maseches Chalah (1st Perek) discusses a case of "Teriktah'' (which are "Sufganim'' - thin wafers baked from a runny dough). Rav Yitzchak instructed that it is permitted to prepare one, but two or three are prohibited unless one washes his hands with water between each.

(v)

(Beraisa): Grass water sprinkled with bread crumbs must be destroyed. (Note: According to Pnei Moshe, the Beraisa is discussing a dish made from herbs with a small amount of flour used to bind it together. The Beraisa is teaching that we do not say that the flour is batel (annulled) due to its small quantity.)

(w)

R. Yosi instructed that Plulina must be destroyed. (Pnei Moshe gives a similar description to the previous case, that it is a dish of pickled herbs containing only a small quantity of flour).

(x)

(R. Abahu quoting R. Yochanan): Batzek HaCheresh in the Mishnah is cooled dough.

(y)

(The Mishnah had stated): "...If other dough that was kneaded at that time became Chametz''. How long is that period of time?

(z)

(R. Yaakov bar Acha/ R. Ulla): The time it takes to walk four Mil (roughly 72 minutes).
