SUMMARY

1. If there is a nick or dent in the part of the Mizbe'ach made from earth the size of a Tefach (according to Rebbi Shimon ben Yochai) or the size of an olive (according to Rebbi Eliezer ben Yakov), it is Pasul.

2. If a Shochet fails to show his knife to a Chacham, he is excommunicated, even if his knife is found to be valid.

3. One is permitted to perform Shechitah with a single tooth from a jaw which has been detached from an animal, or with a claw which has been detached from an animal.

4. If one slaughters with a harvesting sickle, the Shechitah is Pasul, according to Beis Shamai.

5. According to Beis Hillel, if one slaughters with a harvesting sickle with one stroke, the Shechitah is valid and the flesh is not Metamei like that of a Neveilah, but the meat may not be eaten.

6. The top of the upper ring of cartilage which encircles the trachea of an animal is the uppermost place for Shechitah, according to the Tana'im of the Mishnah. Rebbi Chanina ben Antignos disagrees.

7. If the majority of the Shechitah was done in the upper ring of the trachea and a minority was done above the ring, it is Pasul according to the Tana Kama. Rebbi Yosi bar Yehudah disagrees.

8. Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah maintains that the Shechitah may be done through the lower rings of the trachea of an animal, even though the rings do not encircle the entire circumference of the trachea.

9. One who is traveling from place to place must adhere to the stringencies of his place of residence and the place where he is visiting.

10. If the Shochet cuts through the wheat-shaped cartilage below the slant of the helmet-shaped cartilage, there is a dispute about whether the Shechitah is valid.

A BIT MORE

1. However, if there is a nick in the stone of the Mizbe'ach, it is Pasul even if it is very slight.

2. If his knife is found to be flawed, he is removed from his position, and an announcement is made that the meat he slaughtered is not Kosher.

3. However, if one slaughters with two teeth, the Shechitah is Pasul because of the gap between the teeth. If one slaughters with an attached claw, the Shechitah is Pasul according to Rebbi, who maintains that Shechitah may not be done with something that is attached to the ground or to an animal.

4. However, if the teeth of the sickle are filed down, it is considered the same as a knife and it may be used for Shechitah.

5. Although the Shechitah is valid if it is done with only one stroke, nevertheless Beis Hillel does not allow the meat to be eaten because of the concern that the Shechitah will be done with two strokes which is Pasul.

6. Shechitah done above the upper ring is called Hagramah, and it is Pasul according to the Tana'im of the Mishnah. Rebbi Chanina ben Antignos maintains that Hagramah is valid.

7. According to the Tana Kama, the entire Shechitah must be done within the upper ring, otherwise it is Hagramah and is Pasul. Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah maintains that if the majority of the Shechitah is done within the ring, it is sufficient.

8. Rav and Shmuel maintain that the Halachah follows Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah with regard to the Shechitah of the majority of the upper ring, but not with regard to the Shechitah of the lower rings.

9. However, according to Abaye, one who travels to Eretz Yisrael from Bavel is not obligated to adhere to the stringencies of his original place of residence.

10. According to Mar Zutra, it is valid. Mar Zutra maintains that the Halachah follows Rebbi Chanina ben Antignos who rules that Hagramah is valid. According to Mar bar Rav Ashi, it is invalid, because he maintains that even according to Rebbi Chanina ben Antignos the Shechitah is valid only until the bottom of the wheat-shaped cartilage.
