DAF DISCUSSIONS - ZEVACHIM 55

Pesach asked:

Can anyone at the Kolel answer - why does it say (Mishnah 55A) that Ayl Nazir (and the parts given to the Kohen) is eaten 'b'Kol Ma'achal"? It (and the Zero'a Besheilah) must be cooked (in water - certainly, in a pot)!

Pesach

The Kollel replies:

Excellent question: The Torah indeed refers to a "Zero'a Besheilah" from the Ayil.

It is possible that the answer can be inferred from Rashi in Zevachim (53a, DH "ba'Kol Machol"). Rashi there states that by all of the Korbanos listed in the Mishna it is stated "b'Kol Machal" in order to contrast with the Korban Pesach which is only eaten when roasted. It is possible that because the Halachah by the Korban Pesach is so Chamur that the concentration of b'Kol Machal only concerned itself with the Korban Pesach, not with the Zero'a. The words b'Kol Ma'achal therefore were kept in this Mishna as well, and refer to the Korban Todah which indeed can be eaten b'Kol Ma'achal. [It is also possible that the words b'Kol Ma'achal are still relevant to the Zero'a Besheilah in a small way, as one can eat it with spices and the like, which is also possibly hinted at in the phrase b'Kol Ma'achal.]

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
