DAF DISCUSSIONS - BERACHOS 9

Max Preschel asked:

What is meant by "vatikim" and "acherim?"

The Kollel replies:

"Vatikin" literally means "the ancients," and refers to devout and humble people who cherish the Mitzvos (Rashi), or to outstanding scholars noted for deep analysis and sharp reasoning (Talmidei Rabeinu Yonah). See Background to 25:23a.

"Acherim" refers to a Tana, whom the Gemara at the end of Horiyos (14a) says is the Tana Rebbi Me'ir. See there as to why exactly was he refered to by the title "Acherim" ("others") and not by his name.
