PESACHIM 113 (7 Cheshvan) - Dedicated in honor of the Yahrzeit of ha'Gaon Rav Meir Shapiro (n. 5694/1933), founder of the renowned Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, representative of the Jewish community in the Polish parliament, and creator of the DAFYOMI STUDY CYCLE (see www.dafyomi.co.il/dafyomi.htm for more) - may he entreat before Hash-m's holy throne for the complete redemption of Klal Yisrael, speedily in our days!. Dedicated by Mr. and Mrs. Shmuel Kovacs of Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel; may the great Gaon be a Melitz Yosher for the Kovacs children, including their newborn baby, to grow up with love of Torah and Yir'as Shamayim and succeed in all that they do.

1)

THE FIRST CUP OF WINE (Yerushalmi Halachah 2 Daf 69b)

(a)

(Mishnah): They pour for him the first cup.

1.

Beis Shamai say - One makes the blessing on the day and afterwards the blessing on the wine.

2.

Beis Hillel say - One makes the blessing on the wine and afterwards the blessing on the day.

(b)

(Gemara): What is the reasoning of Beis Shamai? The Kidush caused the wine to come and he was already obligated in Kidush before the wine came.

(c)

What is the reasoning of Beis Hillel? The wine causes the ability to say Kidush. Another reason is that the wine is frequent and Kidush is infrequent.

(d)

R. Yosi: From both of their opinions one may conclude that when one must recite the blessings on wine and Havdalah, the wine is first. The reasoning of Beis Shamai is that the Kidush of the day caused the wine to come - here also, since Havdalah did not cause the wine to come, the wine precedes. The reasoning of Beis Hillel is that the wine is frequent and the Kidush is infrequent - here also, since the wine is frequent and the Havdalah is infrequent, the wine precedes.

(e)

R. Mana: From both of their opinions one may conclude that when one must recite the blessings on wine and Havdalah, Havdalah is first. The reasoning of Beis Shamai is that he was obligated in Kidush before the wine came - here also, since he was obligated in Havdalah before the wine come, Havdalah precedes. The reasoning of Beis Hillel is that the wine causes the ability to say Kidush - here also, since the wine does not cause the ability to say Havdalah, Havdalah precedes.

(f)

R. Zeira: From the opinions of both R. Yosi and R. Mana one may conclude that one may recite Havdalah without wine (as they both say that even without wine, one recites Havdalah) but one may not recite Kidush without wine.

(g)

R. Zeira's own opinion concurs with this, as R. Zeira said that one may recite Havdalah on beer, but one must go from place to place in order to hear Kidush on wine.

(h)

R. Yosi bei R. Bun: In Bavel the custom is that in a place where there is no wine, the cantor recites the blessing "Me'ein Sheva'' (the blessing of Magen Avos that is recited on Friday night in the synagogue) and ends the blessing with "He sanctifies Yisrael and the day of Shabbos''.
