SUMMARY

1. The Gemara explains that obtaining a Halachically valid wall for the laws of Shabbos is more difficult than obtaining a valid wall for the laws of Sukah.

2. Rava says that if a wall is considered a wall for Sukah, it is also considered a wall for Shabbos.

3. There is a dispute about whether the shade of walls counts towards having more shade than sun in the Sukah.

4. Abaye lists many Tana'im who maintain that a Sukah must be somewhat of a permanent structure.

5. The Gemara cites each Tana's opinion (#2).

A BIT MORE

1. This is because an area is not a private domain on Shabbos if it has more open space surrounding it than closed space. However, a valid Sukah may have two walls plus a wall one Tefach wide, and have entranceways in those walls, causing the space it is surrounding to be more open than closed.

2. This means that on Shabbos Sukos the Sukah (described above in #1) is considered a private domain, even though on an ordinary Shabbos it would not be considered a private domain.

3. The Tana Kama: It does not. Rebbi Yoshiyah: It does.

4. While these Tana'im sometimes disagree with each other, they all maintain that a Sukah must be more than a minimum size or strength. This implies that they maintain that it must be permanent to some degree.

5. For example, Rebbi says that a Sukah must be four by four Amos, the minimum size of a house. This is in contrast to other opinions that rule that it may be even six or seven square Tefachim.
