YOMA 32 (2 Sivan) - Dedicated in memory of Harry Bernard Zuckerman, Baruch Hersh ben Yitzchak and Miryam Toba, by his children and sons-in-law.

SUMMARY

1. The Gemara explains the verse, "And Aharon will come to the Ohel Mo'ed."

2. The Gemara explains how we know that Aharon had to immerse in a Mikvah five times on Yom Kippur.

3. Each immersion requires two washings of the hands and feet.

4. Everyone agrees that the second washing of hands is done after the new clothes are donned.

5. One must slaughter most of a Siman (the trachea or the esophagus) in order for that Siman to be considered cut.

A BIT MORE

1. The verse does not explain what exactly Aharon does when he comes to the Kodesh ha'Kodashim. The Gemara explains that he comes to take away the vessels that he used for offering the Ketores in front of the Aron.

2. The Gemara quotes the verse that says that after one service he would immerse, change into the other clothes (he would alternate between his regular Bigdei Kehunah and the special Bigdei Lavan of Yom Kippur), and perform another service. This teaches that whenever he would go from one service to another he would immerse in a Mikvah.

3. The Gemara derives from the phrase "and he will wash" that appears between "and he will take off" and "and he will wear" that the washing of the hands and feet is required upon each act of removal of and donning of the priestly garments.

4. This is derived from the words, "or when they approach," which imply that he is ready to approach without having to get dressed. This would occur only if he dressed before washing his hands and feet.

5. Accordingly, the Kohen Gadol must make sure when he slaughters the animals that he cuts (through slaughtering) most of the trachea and esophagus, just as all animals are considered slaughtered only in this fashion.
