SUMMARY

1. At times, there were 300 Kor of ashes on the altar.

2. All types of wood were suitable for burning on the Mizbe'ach except for grapevines and olive wood.

3. Rebbi Ami: The Torah, Nevi'im, and the Rabanan sometimes use phrases that are exaggerations.

4. Shmuel argues that the Tamid was indeed given to drink from a golden cup.

5. The wood and branches of fig trees were often used as wood for the Mizbe'ach.

A BIT MORE

1. Rava: This is an exaggeration; it means a lot of ashes. Similarly, when the Mishnah states that they would give the animal designated as the Korban Tamid a drink from a golden cup, it is an exaggeration.

2. Rav Papa: These types of wood are knotty and cause excessive smoke, and therefore they were unfit to be used upon the Mizbe'ach. Rav Acha bar Yakov: These types of wood were not used upon the Mizbe'ach in order to promote settling Eretz Yisrael by ensuring that there would be plenty of grapevines and olive trees to produce wine and oil in Eretz Yisrael.

3. The Torah describes the cities of the nations in Eretz Yisrael as "great fortified cities in the heavens." The prophets, describing the effects of a lot of noise, said, "And the land split due to the sound." (See #1 above for examples from the Mishnah.)

4. The reason for this is that the Beis ha'Mikdash was a place of wealth; it would have been inappropriate to use inferior materials.

5. Rav Acha, who said earlier (see #3) that grapevines and olive wood were not used in order to ensure that there would be a lot of wine and oil in Eretz Yisrael, said that these trees must not have been fig trees that produced good figs, since the same reason would apply to such trees. Rather, they were palm trees that did not produce fruit.
