MENACHOS 50 (20 Tishrei) - Dedicated by Al and Sophia Ziegler of Har Nof, Jerusalem, and their son Jared, in loving memory of Al's mother, Chaya bas Berel Dov Ziegler, on the day of her Yahrzeit - and towards Jared's continued growth in Torah and Yir'as Shamayim.

SUMMARY

1. If the Korban Tamid was not offered in the morning when the Mizbe'ach was newly constructed, the Tamid of the afternoon also may not be offered.

2. Rebbi Shimon says that if the Kohanim deliberately failed to offer the Korban Tamid in the morning, they may not offer the Tamid of the afternoon, even if the Mizbe'ach is not newly constructed.

3. Rebbi Shimon agrees that if the Kohanim deliberately failed to be Maktir the Ketores in the morning, they may be Maktir the Ketores in the evening.

4. There is a disagreement about whether the first Haktarah on a newly constructed Mizbe'ach ha'Zahav was the Ketores of the morning or of the afternoon.

5. The Lechem ha'Panim was placed on the newly constructed Shulchan for the first time on Shabbos, just as every week the Lechem ha'Panim is placed on the Shulchan on Shabbos.

6. The Ketores is never offered as a Nedavah, it is never offered by an individual, and it is never offered on the outer Mizbe'ach. However, there is one exception.

7. The Kohen Gadol offers a complete Isaron of flour for his Minchas Chavitin, and he divides it in half. He offers half in the morning and half in the evening.

8. If a Kohen Gadol brought the Chavitin in the morning and subsequently died, the newly appointed Kohen Gadol does not bring the other half of the Isaron in the evening. Instead, he brings an entire Isaron and divides it in half.

9. If a Kohen Gadol brought the Chavitin in the morning and the other half of the Isaron became Tamei, he must bring another Isaron for the evening and divide it in half.

10. According to the Tana of Rabah bar Avuha, even Pigul may not be burned until it is left overnight. The Rabanan disagree.

11. Rav Ashi says that even the Rabanan agree that the half of the Chavitin which is leftover from a Kohen Gadol who was appointed in the afternoon must be left overnight before it is burned.

12. The Minchas Chavitin is fried before it is baked, according to the Tana Kama. Rebbi says that it is baked before it is fried.

13. The Minchas Chavitin is kneaded, shaped, and baked inside the Azarah, and it is baked even on Shabbos.

A BIT MORE

1. The first Korban offered on a newly constructed Mizbe'ach must be the Tamid of the morning. Therefore, if the Kohanim failed to offer the morning Tamid, the afternoon Tamid also may not be offered.

2. The Rabanan penalized the Kohanim who deliberately failed to offer the morning Tamid, and they must give way to other Kohanim who will bring the Korban Tamid in their place. However, if they failed to bring the morning Tamid b'Shogeg or b'Ones, they may bring the afternoon Tamid.

3. The Rabanan did not penalize the Kohanim for deliberately failing to be Maktir the Ketores, because it was a rare occurrence that the Kohanim would neglect this Avodah. The Haktaras Ketores make the Kohanim wealthy, and thus they usually make every effort to bring it.

4. The opinion that the Ketores of the afternoon was the first Haktarah derives the Haktaras Ketores from the Haktaras Menorah, which was done first in the afternoon. The opinion that the Ketores of the morning was the first Haktarah derives the Haktaras Ketores from the Hakravas Tamid, which was the first Korban offered in the morning.

5. If the Lechem ha'Panim was placed on the Shulchan on a weekday, it does not become sanctified to become Pasul with Yotzei or with any other Pesul until Shabbos.

6. The Nesi'im were the one exception: they brought Ketores as a Nedavah on the outer Mizbe'ach of the Mishkan in the Midbar as a Hora'as Sha'ah.

7. The Kohen Gadol offers a Minchas Chavitin daily. A Kohen Hedyot offers a Minchas Chavitin on the day he is initiated for the Avodah.

8. If a new Kohen Gadol is appointed on the same day on which the former Kohen Gadol dies, he must bring an entire Isaron, divide it in half, and offer half of the Isaron in the evening. He destroys the other half along with the remaining half of the Isaron of the first Kohen Gadol.

9. The Kohen Gadol must divide the Isaron, offer half in the evening, and destroy the other half.

10. Although Pigul is a severe Pesul mid'Oraisa, it may not be burned until it is left overnight, according to the Tana of Rabah bar Avuha. However, according to the Rabanan, only a less-severe Pesul must be left overnight before it is burned.

11. Although at the time it was divided one of the halves was not fit to be offered on the Mizbe'ach, it is not considered a severe Pesul since the Kohen Gadol may bring whichever half he chooses, according to Rav Ashi. It may not be burned unless it was left overnight.

12. Rebbi Yosi says that it is baked, then fried, and then baked again.

13. Rav Huna says that it is baked even on Shabbos, because if it is done before Shabbos it will swell up by the time it is offered on Shabbos. Tana d'Vei Rebbi Yishmael and Abaye say that a Gezeiras ha'Kasuv teaches that it is baked on Shabbos.
