SUMMARY

1. Min ha'Torah, at least one knot must be made on each corner of the garment in order to tie the Tzitzis together.

2. If one of the strings of Tzitzis snapped off completely from the garment, the Tzitzis are Pasul.

3. The string of the Tzitzis which wraps around the other strings counts as one of the eight strings.

4. The wrapping of the strings of the Tzitzis should cover one-third of the length of the strings, and the remaining two thirds should be left loose. However, the Tzitzis are valid even if the majority of the length of the strings is wrapped.

5. Wool Tzitzis may be used for a linen garment and vice versa.

6. There is a disagreement about whether a mixture of wool and linen Tzitzis may be placed on a silk garment.

7. Tzitzis of wool or linen may be used for garments of all materials but Tzitzis of other materials may only be used for the same material as the Tzitzis.

8. According to one version of Rebbi Yishmael's statement, only wool and linen garments are obligated mid'Oraisa to have Tzitzis. However, according to another version of his statement, even materials other than wool and linen are obligated mid'Oraisa to have Tzitzis.

A BIT MORE

1. Since a knot is required Min ha'Torah, the Torah must give special dispensation to allow Tzitzis to be made from Sha'atnez. Had the Torah not required a knot, there would have been no need for a special dispensation to make Tzitzis from Sha'atnez. Sha'atnez is prohibited only when the two types of garments are attached to each other in a significant way. Merely inserting Tzitzis into an opening in the corner of the garment is not a sufficient attachment for the prohibition of Sha'atnez to take effect.

2. If the string only partially snapped off, it is valid, provided that enough string remains to make a bow.

3. One white string and one Techeles string should be wrapped around the strings of the Tzitzis, and those two strings should be longer than the other strings of the Tzitzis.

4. One string must be wrapped around the other strings of the Tzitzis, and then a knot must be made. It should be wrapped between seven to thirteen times in order to symbolize either the seven firmaments alone, or the seven firmaments with the six spaces between them.

5. The Torah exempts Tzitzis from the prohibition of Sha'atnez.

6. According to Rav Yehudah, Tzitzis made from a mixture of wool and linen may be used even for a silk garment, because he maintains that even materials other than wool and linen are obligated mid'Oraisa to have Tzitzis. Therefore, one is permitted to make the Tzitzis from Sha'atnez. According to Rav Nachman, a silk garment is obligated to have Tzitzis only mid'Rabanan. Therefore, Tzitzis made from a mixture of wool and linen may not be used because of the prohibition of Sha'atnez.

7. Even according to Rebbi Yehudah who maintains that other materials besides wool and linen are Chayav in Tzitzis Min ha'Torah nevertheless, Tzitzis strings of other materials may only be used for a garment made from the same material.

8. However, even materials other than wool and linen are obligated mid'Rabanan to have Tzitzis.
