SUMMARY

1. There is a dispute about the usage of different items as fuel for a fire on Yom Tov.

2. There is a dispute about the status of a piece of cloth that is less than three by three Tefachim that is used as a stopper (of a bath).

3. The Mishnah prohibits one from having a vessel slowly drip oil into a lamp on Shabbos.

4. However, if this slowly-dripping vessel is attached to the lamp, then it is permitted.

5. All agree that one who extinguishes a burning wick on Shabbos in order to make a coal has transgressed a Torah prohibition.

A BIT MORE

1. For example, Rebbi Yehudah maintains that date pits may not be used, while Rebbi Shimon permits them.

2. Rebbi Eliezer: It is Tamei whether it is used permanently or not. Rebbi Yehoshua: It is always Tahor. Rebbi Akiva: It is Tamei only when it is used permanently.

3. The Rabanan prohibited this in order to prevent a person from using the oil from the lamp and thereby causing the flame to become extinguished.

4. This is because the person knows not to use the oil of the Shabbos lamp on Shabbos, and he will not use it if it is physically attached to the lamp.

5. This is because he is extinguishing a fire on Shabbos (Mechabeh) in a productive manner (Melachah she'Tzerichah l'Gufah).
