SOTAH 12 (2 Sivan) - This Daf has been dedicated in memory of Harry Bernard Zuckerman, Baruch Hersh ben Yitzchak (and Miryam Toba), by his children and sons-in-law.

SUMMARY

When someone marries a woman for the sake of Heaven the Torah regards it as if he gave birth to her.

Kalev's face turned black from all of the fasts that he took upon himself as a merit to be saved from the Atzas Meraglim.

At the time of her marriage to Kalev Miryam was pale and sickly and as a result of Kalev's care she became healthy and robust.

When Pharaoh decreed that all of the sons will be thrown in the water Amram divorced his wife. (1)

Upon the advice of his daughter Miryam Amram remarried his wife. (2)

The decree of a Tzadik will inevitably be fulfilled.

Yocheved was conceived on the way to Mitzrayim and she was born between the walls.

Women that are Tzidkaniyos are not included in the decree of Chavah.

For Tzadikim their money is dearer to them than their body. (3)

Bas Pharaoh went down to the water to wash off from the idols of her father's house.

The maidservants of Bas Pharaoh tried to stop her from saving Moshe and the Mal'ach Gavriel killed them.

It is a Machlokes whether Bas Pharaoh reached out her hand to take Moshe or if she sent her maidservant. (4)

The Egyptian stargazers saw that the Deliverer of Klal Yisrael would be punished in water and they decreed that all males shall be thrown in the water.

After Moshe was thrown into the water the Egyptians repealed the Gezeirah. (5)

Moshe was thrown in the water on the twenty first of Nisan.

Moshe refused to nurse from the Egyptian midwives.

Yocheved was paid by Bas Pharaoh to nurse her son Moshe.

A BIT MORE

1. Amram was the Gadol ha'Dor and when he divorced his wife everyone else followed suit.

2. Miryam said to her father that Pharaoh decreed only on the sons and your decree is also on the daughters. Pharaoh decreed only in this world and your decree is also in the next world. Pharaoh's decree is only a Safek if it will be fulfilled while your decree will definitely be fulfilled.

3. Their money is earned honestly and therefore every cent is valuable.

4. According to the opinion that she reached out her hand, it miraculously lengthened enough for her to reach him.

5. Because it appeared to the stargazers that the deliverer had already been punished in the water.

BRIEF INSIGHT

EGYPTIAN STARGAZERS

The Egyptian stargazers saw that the Deliverer of Klal Yisrael would be punished in water and they decreed that all males would be thrown in the water. After Moshe was thrown into the water the Egyptians repealed the decree because it appeared to the stargazers that the deliverer had already been punished in the water. Rashi explains that since Moshe was put in the water it constituted a fulfillment of the destined decree that the Deliverer would be punished in the water. The Maharsha asks if the punishment had already been fulfilled why does the Gemara state that they did not know that the destined punishment was a result of Mei Merivah. The Maharsha answers that putting Moshe in the water was only a partial fulfillment of the destined decree and they did not realize that the true fulfillment of the decree was only much later at the time of the Mei Merivah.
